Default Irish Bog Oak and Blk TI Slimline

I had for me a strange request for a slimline.

My son was in town from Montana for the holidays just after completing his Doctorate and he wanted a pen for his FIL ...

He digs through my boxes and pulls out this wax covered Irish Bog Oak blank because his FIL is Irish. (bad pics batter is dying and shot freehand)

I've never turned this stuff before ... It is covered in wax and I have no idea which blank fairy dropped this in my collection.

This stuff is blacker than night and is a major pain in my keester to turn as pieces, chips and splinters just seem to fall off this thing.

He wants a 'satin' finish. I told him I don't do anything but gloss. So I compromised with him. Three coats of Sanding Sealer. I refused to put the little dinky centerband on this Blk TI Slimline.

He also likes this plain-jane piece of 100 year old cedar fence post with no finish so you can smell it.

His wife on the other hand is more normal. She chose out a really nice piece of Curly Cherry and wants a Cigar pen.

Always nice to be able to create on request ,gives some direction to the outcome
The majority of my work is "spec pens" for local markets so mainly turn and hope lol.

I like doing custom pens, but it's always nerve wracking, to think you might spend all the time, effort and materials making something, and when you show them, they don't like it. Not that people usually say if they don't anyway, but you're always left wondering if they really mean it or not. Maybe that's just my insecurities showing through.

Anyway, good work on the pens. If they want them, who are we to argue?

I love the bog oak one. But then again I like dark timber anyway. Well done on both pens.

Thanks for the kind words Russell.

Well my son isn't bashful ... he didn't like the Bog oak one. No center band, too shiny and didn't like the shape.

So I took it apart and promptly caught the edge of my carbide tool on the end and broke off a chunk. Looked for some black platic but didn't have any but I did have some blood wood and made a center band.

Two coats of sanding sealer and then buffed with 0000 steel wool. He doesn't like this he I'll send him a Bic along with the other two

And a finish comparison from shiny to dull ...

Thats a great looking pen in the Irish Oak Ron.
I think I like it best with the centerband.

Thanks ... I like it with the centerband also but haven't heard back from the son yet.

Thanks John ... he doesn't like shiny (and the pen isn't for him but his father in law). He thinks that these are too fat.

Maybe I'll take all those centerbands I don't use and ca them on a tube and spray paint them flat black except one ...

    Rhos

That would look good with a CA finish - add a lot more character to it, but if your son is not into shiny, then so be it. Very nice timber and great turning.
