Default did me first knot today

this new bandsaw is getting me in deeper .
i did my first celtic knot today and yep i know it aint perfect but i am happy with it for a first attempt and i am half way through gluing up my second one
this one is the longwood pen done with red cedar and white cedar ( and 5minute araldite )
i think my blank was not quite spot on square which put my knot out of proportion just a bit.
i cut the slots at 45 degrees but i think it would probably of been better with a little more angle , although the second one i have started on is also 45 ( its to be a baron ).
the ca finish seems to of attracted some fine sawdust from the pine while taking the pics , i think everything i own has sawdust on it .
feel free to throw any tips my way on knot making.
i cut the slots with my sliding compound saw and the slices with the shiny bandsaw.

    hey Texx
I am going to have to drive down one day and catch up, because you do some great work. You are very modest thats nice piece work. Would like to know how to ?
    cheers

    Looks better than my first

Not sure on your process but I found the easiest way was to cut nearly all the way through the blank (but leave it in one piece) then glue in the veneer. After that I trimmed & sanded before moving on to the next face.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I do it the same way as corbs and it works very well. I also have a little jig that I made up that gives me the exact angles which I cut on the TS. Try a 60 deg angle. I think they turn out really well, 45deg is a bit tight but nevertheless, you have done an excellent job for a first attempt. It is certainly much better than my first attempt.
    Keep it up, great work.

    thanks very much guys .

baldone i am in toowoomba every wednesday , dont have a heck of a lot of time to spare when im there , but im there .

corbs , yep thats what i did , i set the depth stop on my scm saw to leave about 2 or 3 mm uncut .

munruben , i will try the 60 degree on the next one for sure cos i rekon that one is just to compact .

by the way i just stuffed up the second one , got the 3rd veneer in and had a good look and they aint matching up well at all , had another look and its the blank being out of square , looks that is very important with these things

    Well done Texx

As with Corbs, much better than my first, that I did without a jig

60 degrees is the way to go Texx, but your blank has to be square or the cuts wont line up. Nice job on your first try I wish my first one was as good as that.

Great first attempt Texx, I haven't worked up the courage to try a knot yet so I take my hat off to you for such a great looking pen.
