Leaking Fountain Pen
G'day All,
I had a nice fountain pen, that I posted to a mate, and somewhere along the line, the ink leaked out all over the timber which was a piece I had finished with shellawax,
Any ideas on how to remove the ink?
Any ideas on why it leaked?

Did the pen get delivered by plane, the pressure would do it. You should not load any pen prior to delivery for this reason. Even just change in altitude can do it.
Can it be fixed - your shellawax finish should have sealed it, so hopefully it can be wiped clean. If it has soaked in however staining the timber, I'd say it is stuffed, sorry.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

hope it can be fixed it would be a shame for your hard work to be ruined by a unwanted coat of black ink

It wasn't sent by plane - just good ole Australia Post!
Back to the drawing board I am afraid, and start from the beginning.
I don't have a pic of the pen yet, but the way I figure it the pen has leaked from the inside out.
At least I have some more Douglas Fir to make another!
And let that be a lesson to me, don't put ink cartridges in fountain/nib pens before they reach their destination
As long as it doesn't happen to the customer, when he puts the cartridge in.

Good Advice by Neil, don't put ink in the fountain pen, to test it, just use an ink bottle of good ink, the tiniest dip of the nib will do a page!!!, then clean off excess ink, maybe wash nib with luke warm water, dry off and ready for shipping.!
As for staining, I find that pens finished with wax will allow colour bleeding when I laser Engrave and then back fill with colour, whereas, if it is Shellawax and a coat or two of CA, there is no or very little bleeding of the colours. AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

leaking fountain pen
G'day All,
I spoke to my mate who reckons it leaked from around the nib somewhere, and he blamed Aust Post. Whether it was me, or them, it's a good lesson for next time

I never load my fountain pens or my roller ball pens so they do not dry up before the recipient is ready to use it.
Bad luck at least it was not a one off blank.Cheers Rum Pig

If it wasn't a local post it would have gone by air. I do the same as Nick.

leaking fountain pen
G'day Sam,
Local post, my mate doesn't have an airport in his town, and it's only a couple of hours from the big smoke, so I am sure it went by truck.
An expensive lesson, not so much for the cost of the materials, but for not giving the mate a really great gift. I can rectify that, and either give him another pen, without putting the ink cartridge in, or a winning ticket in lotto
At least he's understanding, whereas a customer may not have been quite so nice about the whole thing!
