a new pen
i haven't posted in some time anywhere on here but i couldnt wait to post this all day
i got frustrated with my wood lathe some time ago then i moved in the big metal lathe and i said i would make a new lathe a better one for the small stuff i love to do .....well i cant use the big lathe yet and so i rebuilt my old lathe taking it all apart and shortening the 2 piece pipe bed to half the length ...broke the motor so i mounted my spare grinder that runs twice as fast fun time trying to get a bush for the pulley on the grinder i had heaps of hardened bushes that i grabbed ages ago that fit both nearly looked around and found the unhardened bushes then thought i would slit them to fit better did that and found the spare bush for for my other grinding wheel!!!!!! got everything back together mostly it doesn't have any guards and i only used one speed but it makes less noise and wasn't a PTA to try and turn on so i thought i would try a pen today and so i did
its a Brazilian wood slim line from Carba Tec
i thought i stuffed it up in its shape but im really happy with how it turned out and really smooth
i used 2 coats of sanding sealer, 3 coats of polyurethane and last a coat of #### hot wax got to love that stuff
all in all i really like it but one problem it doesn't work i cant turn it at all can it be fixed?
tomorrow im going to try the Purple Heart i hope you likehappy turning

I think Russell is on the right track, try sliding the cap end off the activater as if you were changing the refill ,take the refill out and retry without it, if it now turns you will find that the refill will not fit up the nib from the front end ,this is why it wont work, ease the nib hole with a small drill it won't be much ,until the refill will slide into the nib easily, after that should be fine to reassemble .Failing that the activater may be damaged so need to check that for function as well. Good luck with it John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Nice work on the pen a pity you have a problem with it.
Maybe the mechanism is damaged if so just disassemble it and replace it a few people sell these as spare bits

New Guy
Two things i do now every time I make a ASlimline I check the biro in the winding mech to test the mating threads, I keep a cardboard box near and test scribble on it to check the ink flow and swome biro makers put a dob of something like a hard wax on the point that seals, with your finger nail it pops off. Ok the horse has bolted maybe you need a removal kit that is a small long rod to push through the winder mech you installed to remove Then a close fit 1/4 inch round rod to drift out the winding mech.
All said and done from my end welcome to share with us your contributions firstly this pen is a ripper, your own make and shape that is very functional indeed. The pen looks great be very pleased.
Regards Peter. PS Qld is a big place name your area chances are someone lives near you can help.

thanks for your replies everyone i found out what was wrong with the pen i put the twisting mechanism in wrong and so both tubes were griping the aluminum (some times brass) ring when i pulled the 2 apart not only was it very hard but the the mechanism stayed with the upper tube and so over to the vice i took the end off (ruining the top but anyway) and pushed the mechanism out sounds easy now but i damaged the top tube it has some bad gashes from the clip but i put it back on the lathe and its had its first new coat of polly so it should be finished latter this afternoon
thanks Peter the first pen i made had a big ball down the bottom maybe a little to big but its not to bad to hold while writing. i dont like plain flat pens they show off the wood but can be a little more fancy without being over the top. i wasn't sure if this pen was going to turn out comfortable or not but surprisingly is. the next one i think will be a little different oh and im in Ipswich
thanks for lookinghappy turning
