Pen made By Caitlyn (9yo)
HI I love you to encourage my daughter She is 9 years old. she made this pen from the beginning to the end. Caitlyn has deep dyslexia so she can't read but she can turn a mighty pen. What do you reckon for first time solo on the lathe?? I know terrible photo I am sick of apologising. I was not going to post but I really think she needs a boost.

cant help yourself can you Toni, now your infecting the rest of the family.... How are you going to afford her addiction as well as yours
The pen is great for a first time, she has obviously had a good teacher. Show us more Caitlyn, keept up this sort of quality and you will be surpassing your mom in no timeI may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

BUGGA. How am I supposed to compete with a 9 year old, especially as she's so dammed good. (pity the photo isn't to the same standard as the pen )....just kidding Toni.

What can I say? I like it.
It's a nice change to pantaloons or straight sides; looks very organic as though it grew on the tree like that. I may have to copy it...

Well done Caitlyn. Obviously a good start to many many more. Next you'll be on the forum and your mum will have to compete for the computer, and the lathe.
My nephew has dyslexia and after many years struggling at high school has joined a tafe doing metal turning. His teacher has taken him under his wing and he is really doing well, and loving it. He still struggles with the study side, but has no problems with the turning. He also uses my fathers old metal lathe at my mum's place (around the corner). My father was really close to him and it is really good to see he has a new mentor. Hi Caitlyn & Toni
That is great as most 9 year olds are afraid of machines so you must be special. You can only improve with practice.
I thought I read somewhere that dyslexia can be helped with tinted glasses.
People can certainly overcome dyslexia. Look what Kerry Packer achieved.

Caitlyn does wear the red lens glasses all the time. It has made a big difference but somethings are still a struggle but since the glasses she is coming forward in leaps and bounds.

Nice work Caitlyn - now you'll be queing at the lathe with mum!!
What will she do when she has to wait?? Keep up the great work.
My niece was challenged at school with dyslexia and managed to hide the fact for many years by remembering things really well. She has since left school (before the end of yr 10) with an apprentiship in hairdressing and is excelling in it. The most amazing thing is the apprentiship is in their home town, population a few hundred (farming community), but when she goes to the city for the intensive TAFE stuff, she leaves the older girls way behind with her skills and knowledge. Moral of the story - don't let anything stand in the way of something you really want to do Caitlyn!
