personal pen collections
I stopped and thought the other day (and yes it was painful) I should have a pen collection. The only pens I have are to be used or sold.
So this lead me to think how many pen turners have a personal not for sale collection. What parameters do people put on there collection for e.g
Do you only collect 1 of each pen
Do you make all pen have different timbers
Do you buy other turners pens for your collection
Do you buy commercially made quality pens
Do you only collect timber and not acrylic
E.T.C I could go on but I think you get my drift.
Please I would love to know about your collections if you have one.
I'm Definitely about to start mine and have just placed an order for a majestic pen to be the first in my collectionCheers Rum Pig

"Selfish Bugger" hehe ! I wish I could afford to have a "private" collection ,many of the pens I have made over the last year I would have loved to have kept for myself . My Pleasure comes from the creation and the sharing ,as soon as I finish a pen I let go of it,so I don't feel bad when it goes to a new home to be used ,and give pleasure to others they would not otherwise enjoy. Mind you my wife has quite a few in her working collection lol. The only pen I have not for sale was one I got in a pen swap some time back, I made a case for it and it sits on my desk , I do have a Majestic in one of Davids boxes ,made from "Black Coral" belongs to a client and paid for ,but he is on extended holidays in UK hehe , so almost mine making him a "Lotus " fountain pen this week in "Jichimu" well thats what I was told it was hehe, should look good ,have you done a count up to see how many different pen kits are available ,you may be surprised then you have the variations ,roller balls .fountain ,gel-ink and biros, not to mention pencils ,that could be a big collection hehe, but most of all have fun with it all and enjoy , cheers ~ John.
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

I do have a personal pen collection started, although maybe the term "demo" pens may be better.
I have a Eucalypt burl black titanium fountain pen which I use for work (although I have just re-inked it after the original cartridge ran out 6 months ago!).
I have an everyday work gold Sierra that I've also been using for about 9 months, made with Mango wood from the home I grew up in. It's also my plating trial pen which, if I ever get my act together, I want to post pictures of and discuss.
I have a rollerball executive also in my briefcase, made form one of my resin casts, mainly to compare rollerball vs other nib types.
Finally, I received on Monday, a Rhodium Jr Statesman fountain pen kit, which is my most expensive purchase yet, and is just for me, and I have to find just the right blank to put on it. I'd like to put my Shipwreck blank I got in the pen swap on it, but I'm afraid of wrecking such a rare piece, but that's the type of pen I really want for myself, a unique historical fountain pen.
My pen swap pens are also for me, but they will stay as collection pens, and not usage pens, as all my others are so far. I'm sure I'll add more & more to my collection, but there will have to be something unique in each of them. I'll probably also have a collection of fountain pens, each with different colours of the Noodlers Inks I sell, to demo them for anyone who wants to see something more than the boring old blues or blacks we usually see

I have a collection of pens that started well before I got in to this addiction. It all started with a Sheaffer fountain pen presented to me by my parents on my graduation.
There are other pens in the collection, most bought as a memento of special occasions in my life, one is a fountain pen with Brazilian Rosewood bought in the pen shop in Adelaide Arcade when I sold my first software program to the paint industry.
There are also the pens from pen swaps in there, not used but will be kept, all have some meaning. In fact one is so good and came in such a beautifully engraved pen case that it is on permanent display in our lounge room.
The collection also contains the first pen I made myself (not the highlight of the collection I can assure you!)
I also keep a photo(s) of each pen I make so that I can show people what sort of things are possible..

I don't really have a collection of pens other than the first one I made and the one I got in the last pen swap. I have probably 40 pens around the house but not part of a personal collection although I like to look at them to see how I have progressed with my pen making.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

I thought it would have been more popular thing to among the makers.
I'm thinking I would like to make at least 1 of every type of pen I make so in 10 years from now you can look back not only at how far I/you have gone but how the pen kits have changed as well.
I have made several company pens and I have kept 1 each of them just for keep sake so I guess my collection has started without me realising itCheers Rum Pig

My personal collection consists of all those I have never sold, lots, and the ones I receive in the pen swaps. They are never up for grabs.
The less you sell the more your collection gets.

The pens I have from pen swaps- I use them- they are my special pens never to sell, but I think one may have fallen out of my pocket about 1 1/2 years ago, a beautiful Churchill American Walnut from Cisco Kid, I have looked high and low for it. Some of the others I have forgotten WHO gave them to me, I feel embarassed, I treasure them .
The Scorpion Pen from Jeff Powell is not for sale, only two of them made, Jeff has the other.
Then I have a multitude like Sam, waiting for owners but growing attached to me!! AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

better, best.

I've been planning to start a personal pen collection for a while, but haven't done anything yet.
I'm thinking that my first will be a rose gold Australiana EB, or a Rhodium Jr Gent.
Gotta find that perfect piece of wood or acrylic for it first.

Pens
I have a number of pens, give away most for very special people some I have are special for many and various reasons, have about 80 on the go glued up waiting right now. One of our grandsons will marry in Melbourne in late November the Bride will get a red wooden pen to sign the wedding certificate her new husband a west aussie burl.
Often read with great amusement the search for white for wedding pens well have I got news for you do your homework first this bride is Vietnamese white is a death colour, red is happy, I will be flying on a deck chair on the wing of Tiger Airlines Plane for the wedding, he comes from South of Perth, recently moved to Melbourne.
Unlike everyone else the bling factor of kits leaves me curious I am very content living within my means using Slimlines with these days centrebands from Streamline will back the wow factor they create, we seem to spend a lot of time and lots of money thinking people will be most impressed with bling, not so in my experiences over 15 yrs or so.Today i gave my neighbour a faceted Hairy Oak pen to give her brother this weekend on King Island for her brothers 60th birthday.A unique pen in its own right using a straight slimline, very dark and mysterious. Took delivery yesterday of some African Blackwood Burl and recently Cocobolo Burl also rare as will be using Slimlines for them as well.
So yes I have pens on hand for the purpose of pleasure that allows me never to burn out, covet others, share the hobby. Just how it is for me support the way it is for you, made some super friends along the way.
Regards to all as usual Peter.

I have only ever made "Slimlines".
They fit nicely into my presentation case and look uniform.
I try to have one of each type of wood but somehow my
"collection" has outgrown the case.
One of each type certainly creates interest to onlookers.

I must have made a few thousand pens over the years. I only have 3 for myself, a couple of standard timber streamlines that are special to me (some of my first), and my first pine cone Sierra. I used to have some special timber with dragons cast into them I did on the scroll saw, but they were stolen by office cleaners when I left them on the desk one night
I gave away most of them at the start, mainly slimlines or streamlines, selling the odd one for $20 to people I work with. Then I started using higher end kits and my son pointed out the box of 50 I was carrying around to give away over Xmas one year was worth over $2,500 .
I then started collecting them to sell in my retirement at markets or internet. I still sell a few at work of people want them, if they don't want to pay the price, then I don't sell them. I still give heaps of them away . I certainly get more enjoyment from giving them away than selling them, but my wallet can only stretch so far. I think I have around 250 in cases ready for sale sometime .
By the way, I make them out of anything that takes my interestNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
