Fred
Nice work
I would like to ask you the same questions I asked Amos on his thread. Why are you into the kitless fad??? What is it that drives you to do these as opposed to kit or component pens??? Is the creativety greater in these than the other style pens. I just can't wrap my head around the kitless craze. I guess it is not for everyone but I am trying to understand the mad push these days for kitless. Are we digressing back to the old days of pen makers. Blingless. Is this the trend of buyers out there??

JTT, for me it is the desire for creativity and skill, at the moment though it is trying to get the skill,-I reckon Fred already has that! and he can be more creative. As to whether customers want that I do not know, for me it is trying to get satisfaction from it all. I still love the kit pens, nothing against them, hope that explains just a little bit, Amos

Thats funny Fred. I only asked this question here and on The Pen Shop site. On the other site I made it a general question as to here I asked 2 people individually. One was kind enough to answer and you chose this. If I offended you in any way I am sorry.
Someday I may get enough money together and get some taps and dies and give it a try. I will be sure to post my findings. Thanks.

Yes John, that makes it 3 the same questions in 3 different places.
And no, you didn't offend me, I just saw your question as rather condescending with terms such as "fad" and "craze".
I don't "get" why lots of people do things, doesn't mean I have to be condescending and tell them "I just don't get why you are doing that", then do it in 3 different place just to make sure that these people "get" you.
So, I stand by my answer, "If you've got ask, you''ll never know.
In another place you made the point the you would never get in to this as you couldn't afford a metal lathe, the associated tooling or have the room in the shed. Perhaps that drove your question, however all of the above can be done on your wood lathe as has been shown in several good tutorials on the subject.
Perhaps you didn't read those as they were about a "fad" or a "craze"?
Some people are happy to make pens with kits, I have done so and will continue to do so, but some people like a bit more of a challenge. I started on this path when I bought my metal lathe some years ago, I like to make my own tooling and my own blanks. Others are satisfied with buying all that.
