    Default Probably nothing new

I do prefer to mill my pen blanks manually rather than use a
portable or electric drill with a pen mill.

My GMC portable drill no longer works so today I dismantled it
and used the chuck to advantage. I made a handle to suit.

I have two sizes of pen mill so now it is quite easy to use either
    with a minimum of fuss.

    Cleaver thinking

I gave up using the pen mill when I bought a sander from Big Shed. I had to many tear outs but using it by hand may have save me some blanks.
    Well done

Great idea Allan also doubles as a starter hand drill or holder for mini turning tools you can make

Allan, on rare ocassions I use the mill, but the Sander from BigShed has saved me a lot of heartache. However, there is a good possibilty that hand turning the mill may reduce the "grab" effect that the electric drill method can introduce. Amos

Good thinking Allan, and to think I tossed out an old drill that gave up the ghost recently.

    Thumbs up

    Top idea Allan!

I guess the extra heft probably helps to get the job done a little more easily.

Default Here is an artist's impression

The blank slides onto the 7mil solid portion, and faces off against the sanding disc, you can use whatever grade sandpaper you think is best for you. Of cours if you have a larger pen , you must make an insert to fit snuggly inside the blank tube and away you go. ! If i was at home I would photo it for you. Amos

At the risk of starting a new debate on the pros and cons of a sander mill vs a pen mill, if you click on Sander Mill in my signature you can see it there and read both positive and negative comments.

I haven't used a pen mill since I made my first Sander Mill and I have lost count of the number of Sander Mills I have made for other people, in fact I have 3 outstanding orders at present (have been interstate for a week)

Allan, sorry again, didn't mean to hijack your thread, and from the answers it looks like there is merit in the hand held you descibed, Amos

Thanks guys, I will have to make one (or a set)of these up. They sound a more delicate way of trueing up the ends of the blanks after turning and finishing.
