another question
Hello Everyone
it looks like i will be in the market for a new lathe soon
my old woodfast is getting too much sideways movement it the tail stock
i am starting to get the odd pen come out oval shaped if i am not carefull
iv been looking at the GPY midi
to me it looks like a Jet knock off (my opinion only), am wonder if anyone has one and what they are like
or should i just go with jet midi with the 3/4 hp motor
mount isa is a long way from anyone if i have to send back a lathe thats got issues
Thanks in advance for any feed back
Cheers Tony

Hey Tony,
Is your 'Old Woodfast' a little Yellow one???
Personally I would buy another one of those tomorrow, before I even thought about any other midi. We have a jet and wood fast midi at the Local Woodturners Group, and the jet doesn't get started very often,

When I first got my Midi woodfast some yrs ago there was already some slack in the tailstock between the base and the lathe ways ,I had to push it to one side when clamping to line up the centres, I did fix it by shimming the th tailstock base so it was a neater fit in the slides. Still going fine . If your lathe is generally satisfactory why not try and get a replacement tailstock from the manufacturers , a lot cheaper than a whole new lathe I would think Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Vicmarc VL150 Lathe
If you want to go down the track of a new lathe, instead of investing in the same problems buy the best.
The Vicmarc VL150 lathe is a very well made lathe , probably the best there is on the market.
All your accessories will fit direct to the Vicmarc as it is M30 thread and 2mt tapers.Jim Carroll

Tony, I went through the selection process for a new wood lathe some time ago and got fairly discouraged in the end.
Looked at all the wood lathes on the market, both large and small, and there were some real shockers with no apparent link to how much they were selling for.
I had a thread going about this at the time:

Finished up buying the biggest pen lathe you could get, but boy have I been happy with it ever since

John's idea is a good one. Woodfast are based down south. Give them a call and I am sure they will help out with replacements. I wouldn't go past a Woodfast for value. The midi is a great pen lathe and the extension bed is not expensive if you want something a bit longer for other turning.

I have used Vicmarc, Jet, Woodfast, Durden and Carba-tec lathes in varying sizes. Ran a Carba-tec mini for 24 years and have just replaced it. I ended up with a Nova Comet II Midi Lathe. It is variable speed and the quietest lathe I have used. Also there is no vibration within the lathe and the head and tail stock line up accurately. I am very happy with my purchase, and glad I took a chance with something different to what I have always used.
