Yep, he's certainly pushing the envelope. Braver man than me trying stone, but then I don't have a fancy metal lathe either.
Looks like it turned out pretty good. My son has a large collection of rocks. I wonder if he'd part with some of his thunder eggs for you to have a go at?
I'm surprised you haven't come up with a schmick metal pen yet, since you're an old hand at metalwork. You could maybe give Skiprat a run for his money

Great end result John, well worth the effort
Did the darker rings pollish better than the surrounding material? Looks a bit like Jasper in between the layers of sandstone/siltstone by the colour, but I'll have to take a closer look.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Very good John,
I have been toying with the use of sandstone and other similar materials for some time.
You could try soaking the stone in WOP, I do this with soft timbers wit excellent results.
