    Default Titanium Junior Gent II in Silky Oak

    Or at least I think it is silky oak...

    Anyway, this is my first Junior Gent II from CSUSA and I have enjoyed putting it together. The quality of the fittings is definitely a step up from other kits I have used, but this is also reflected in the price of the kit.

    One thing I didn't think to remember during assembly was to take into consideration grain orientation once the cap was on. Unfortunately the grain from the top blank to the bottom blank is slightly misaligned. Not all that noticeable, but I know it is there.

    One thing I don't like is the cap has two take up points when screwing on: by that I mean you can put the cap of and the grain will line up, put it on another time and it will be 90 degrees out. Easier to see in the flesh (wood) but I hope I have explained it.

    I really wanted to try either a WOP or CA finish on this one, but the WOP will take too long and the CA I have now lost a couple of blanks due to towel ripping off on the last coat and ruining the entire damn thing and I really wanted to get this kit together. So I gave Shellawax Glow a whirl after sanding to 12000 micromesh and applied five coats to the raw wood with the lathe running flat out. The finish has come up nicely and again you still get that lovely "wood" feel.

    Toasty, nice pen, good work. As for aligning the grain, once the bottom end is put together, screw up the top cap fitting onto it fairly tightly, then bring the top blank in close and check the orientation that you want, maybe a small pencil mark on the metal and remember what grain is going to go against that pencil mark, remove the fitting off the bottom end and press fit into the top blank, this may also need to be done at the finial end(top cap end), so try to match up before putting together. Sometimes I also get that frustration, even though i have matched them when I put together it is 45-90 degrees off--very frustrating. Amos

    I like that one a lot. Very handsome kit and an interesting timber. Looks a great deal like our quartersawn sycamore over here in the States. Wonder if it could be a relation? Nice photography too. Macro lens at around f20?

    Nice pen Toasty I like the knot feature. The finish and fit up are great pic looks good as well.

    By the look of it it could be northern silky.

    I know what you mean about the two take ups try orientating the flag with this style, frustrating

    That bloody knot almost undid the hole thing. I didn't know how deep into the blank it went and once I turned it round it was a huge gaping void - well it looked huge. Dropped some shavings into it, soaked it with thin CA, hit it with some accelerant and the photo above is the result which I am pretty happy with.

    There are lots of things called silky oak that look like that, not just northern & southern.

    That one has a very fine grain & looks a bit like something that I bought about 10 years ago that the bloke called bull oak.
