is this worth it ??
hi guys
a question for the mad casters out there
i was browsing some PDFfrom the IAP and everyone over that side of the pond raves about harbour freight
so i went for a browse looking for a vac pump and found this beauty
and its BLOODY CHEAP
pulls to 28.3 its retail is $15 US and on special for $13 US
who cares if its on sale as the only other types of vac pumps are the huge air con type or a sausage type worth in excess of $100 +GST+ POSTAGE (and a stupid price at that ) here's the link www.harborfreight.com/air-vacuum-pump-with-r134a-and-r12-connectors-96677.html
it looks like it would last even get more than 1 at that price

I think they work ok ! you need a good compressor to feed them and get them to that Vacuum level. But no moving parts so nothing to wear out ,Also I think you need to get it via a US friend or contact as I don't think they ship OS Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Hey Troy
Why you looking for a vacuim pump? Am I missing out on something? By the way, I sent Lloyd the bowl saver. He bought it from me and I mentioned to him that you could give him a hand as it was you that inspired me to get it. Bit early for me with me moving and all but anyway he is excited.
RogWith kind regards and may the wood chips fly

howdy doody Troy
i have a vacuum pump which i got off of a friend who is a fridge mechanic, the vacuum is not pulling as far down as he needs for work so he threw it at me and got himself a newbie, free is even better again hey
ii used it a couple of times and sprayed the inside of my pressure pot with resin, now i rarely use it, not that i would get rid of it, it will have uses
i think getting a pressure pot that you can pump up fairly high would be a better purchase
just my 20cents worth

hey mik
i will be getting a pressure pot for it to be mounted onto then be able to pull a vac to get bubbles out of casting resin and also for stabilising and using pressure for compressing them ive seen heap of plan for them but trying to get a small vac pump is hard (have found one but about $150inc post and gst ) and not a huge unit off air con

just remember that resin boils at 27" of vacuum
i do use my vacuum pump for dyeing, but at this stage i won't be using it for casting, i am going to get a pressure pot that is rated to a much higher psi, which i think is probably a better way to go with worthless wood, dam why is worthless wood so expensive
all the best

The vac pump looks ok, hopefully you can get it here at a reasonable delivery price.
If you want it to remove bubbles from your resin however, you may be wasting your time. Walming the resin works better, and it helps with penetration too. Resin and vacuum can be more problematic, apart from the low boiling point, there are sepparation problems and the increased volume issues - under pressure things compress, under vacuum the expand!
They do work well for stabilization though, and all I use mine for these days.
Unfortunately, even when buying resin in large quantities, combined with pigments/colouring etc it is not cheap. Then there is wood costs, the time involved, molds, cleaning them up etc etc.
I am going to reduce the price of mine though, as I have a good sorce of free timber now from hereNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

i was only joking about the price, i know how much work goes into it, done a few myself and i have spoken to swino about sending me some scraps(off cuts) as well to
play with
it was just a play on words
how do you warm your resin, the water in the cup underneath method??
does resin microwave well???
could be a good reason to buy a new microwave for SWMBO

this one is a venturi unit, so you need to run it off of a compressor. They're typically
in the $15-$18 range. You might have something local in the same price range if you
ask about 'venturi'. It isn't the typical self contained, stand-alone vacuum pump though.

have looked and googled everywhere and can only find 1 supplier US based with 1 distributor in aust and its a sausage shape venturi and they want over $100aust + gst then freight so im thinking if there any good i might get 2 or 3 if the first 1 lasts then there will be 2 for sale on here and yeah i know about the compressor as when i build my pressure pot i want it to be a stand alone unit with all the connections for pulling vac and pressurising

I'll have to look around more carefully. I see them often, but maybe they call them
something else. I've seen the sausage shaped ones, they get upwards of $350 for them!
If you use a combination gauge (pressure and vac) you can use one port for both.
