Xcut Black Palm no.2 with WIP Pics
Well, had enough for another Sierra and went for it, and after last nights experience I was sure it would go perfectly!
While drilling the blank it broke in two!, no problems, join with CA.
Prepare the blank and away I go very finely, towards the end, off came a piece of blank, fortunately hit my hand and landed on the bench, there it is next to the $2 coin. CA and sawdust and go for it, oops another piece came off, CA and sawdust, go for it and another void, this time sawdust and CA and very fine cuts and finish with 120 grit, then work up to very fine grit grade by grade.
2 coats of Shellawax and mnany coats of CA and there it is, the void portion is under the clip.
You too can have a go! AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

Haha, saved by the clip Nice recovery. I take it the stuff is brittle then? Or is it just because it's X-cut?

Russell, Black Palm is VERY fibrous, even turning it with the grain can be difficult, Amos

I think I may see where you are going wrong, Amos. I too once tried turning a micrometer pen, however I find my 3/4" bowl gouge works much better. Seriously, turning anything crosscut requires sharp tools, light cuts, and lots of patience. A sense of humor comes in handy too at times. Black palm, or any palm for that matter, could be one of the hardest to turn in this manner. I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one to hide his mistakes under the clip!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Actually, the fill in wasn't really that noticeable, just a minor variation, but that is what the clip is for isn't it?? Amos

By golly a man's gotta have a lot of patience to keep going on something like that. But the end result came out very nice. Amos, just gotta ask--why the wax 'under' the CA? Didn't think CA would stick to wax. Some people say they put wax on the bushings to keep the CA from sticking. I've been afraid to do so cause the wax might get on the blank, & if it won't stick to bushings, how come it sticks to the blank? Why not CA directly to the wood?
Also, would that kind of wood be easier soaked in a 'wood hardner' first so it won't came apart as easily when turned? X cut turning can be a bear.

Well done again Amos you definitely have some patience.
Black palm is hard enough to turn straight without xcut, go the CA.
Nice recovery and a beautiful pen. I think I would be using a Skew though.

Mobil man, that blank WAS a stabilized blank already, but as you go deeper further stabilizing with CA helps. As for the "wax" bit, I found that because that wood is so porous that the Shellawax sunk into it and wasn't so much on the surface as just under or level with the surface and I found that my CA stuck ok, but straight out wax I think would have the effect of stopping the CA going on. If the CA had not gone on on the first layer I would have resanded and gone straight CA. Now you have got me going I will try another one! OH NO!, and use CA only and will see what the result is like.
Sam, I think if I used the Skew the blank would be in the rubbish bin by now, I have shyed away from the Skew because I need to learn its proper use and need to learn to sharpen it, I tend to get the angle wrong when I turn it over to sharpen the othe side, the slants go against each other, need to be a mathamatician to figure it out!!!
Thanks AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;
