    Default Procuring greenwood in sydney

    Hi,

I am new to greenwood working and thought i might try my hand at spoons first.
I have a Gransfors Bruks carving axe and some mora carving knives winging their way to me. My next aquisition will need to be some wood and a couple of rounds (chopping blocks).
Does anyone know of anywhere in sydney i could get green wood suitable for this?
Also how difficult wood i be making thingsnif i tried with already dried wood?
Any advice on timber types would be great too.

I have gone on to the nsw forestry site and got a permit to collect wood from there but this can only be trees that have already been felled so am not sure whther i will be able to find anything suitable.

Anyway any tips and advice greatfully recieved
    Cheers
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
haven't been on here for a good while, but thought it was time that I did. A good start with carving spoons would be to go Peter Galbert's bog site, Chairnotes. Pete is predominantly a chair maker, but he also carves amazing spoons from green wood. If you search spoons in the search engine on his blog, you will find all the posts he has made on the subject.

Working with green wood as I do, making windsor chairs I can say with out a doubt that green wood is the way to go. Otherwise you will sporting a good few blisters trying to get the same result from dried timber.

    Hope that help.

    cheers

    Glen
