    Cool Kodiak Sharpening system

I may be in the wrong place but this seemed to be a good place to start.
Does anybody have any experience with the above named system?
I have only seen it as supplied by Wood Turners Wonders in the USA (Atlanta).
The sytem has had heaps of good reviews online with all good comments about their service etc.
But I have had a bit of trouble getting a response from them so far.
Can anybody tell me if they have heard of it or better yet do they know of a supplier that willl ship to Australia?
I am in a club and wood club and we need a system that is really really foolproof and unbreakable.

It does nothing different compared to the Vicmarc sharpening system that you can buy locally.
I would imagine by the time you added the exchange rate , freight etc you are in for a very expensive sharpening system, not to say you would have difficulties with any warranty issues.

These jigs can be swapped from one side to another for the 2 different wheels you are using for shaping and sharpening.

    Thanks Jim

I will check this one out tomorrow. Can you supply one of these?

I have owned and used both the Vicmarc and Woodcut sharpening setups.

Of the two, for gouges, I much prefer the Tru-Grind from Woodcut.

The Vari-Grind gouge jig from Oneway in Canada (used on their Wolverine arm, but you can use it on any arm) is another good gouge jig option.

I haven't used the the offering from Carbatec myself, but some that have are satisfied with it. The gouge jig with it looks very similar to the to to the Vari-Grind.

The same kit from AliExpress sells for for half that price...

I have also used the following 3D printed gouge jig from eBay (set A#) only and it has been OK. It is unlikely to last as long as a metal jig, but it is holding up OK so far with regular use and if doesn't then I can probably order a 3D replacement part anyway...

You can also 3D print a gouge jig yourself...

I don't platform sharpen gouges very often myself, but if I did I would consider a sturdy option like a Stuart Batty platform. Expensive, but a quantum better in every way than all of the other options.

Most of the other platform options on offer all feel too flimsy to me and if platform sharpening is important for you and you can't come at the cost of the Batty platform, then start with the sturdiest arm arrangement you can find and modify it from there by at least adding to it a larger platform table that insets around the wheel like the SB model. I've done that for both my Heligrind and Woodcut platforms.

The Kodiak setup is expensive and provides no additional benefits that I can see.

    Thanks Neils

Had a good look at your info and I reckon we will end up getting a Vicmarc. Local made and we know they have great lathes. We use them in our club.
Anyway it is better to support our own local guys.
    Thanks for your input mate.
Love the Adelaide hills area too.

given my druthers I would prefer the Woodcut over Vicmarc, or at least the one I had was abit cumbersome as it was an earlier one. The only annoying thing about the woodcut was the locking mechanism, I modified mine couldnt stand it, awkward to undo, works fine.

Dead right, Hughie. Having used the original and then Hughie's modification I reckon Woodcraft should change their design. Hughie's is just so much easier!

Agreed, the position of the knob on the Tru-Grind should have been better designed, but you have sorted that issue out Hughie and your fix is on my to-do-list to do on mine, but the Tru-Grind is still better as it is than the VM, IMO. And, after fixing that issue it will be even better again!

I have previously posted my thoughts on the VM gouge jig...

Neil, As being involved in design work for several years, I understand the idea behind the original method. Its compact, neat and aesthetically pleasing, it just needed tweaking to function better. The mod works well, but isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the original and it was simple as I had everything on hand.

If there is a conflict between form and function that can't be resolved then function wins out there for me!

I saw your earlier post on your modification of the Tru-Grind jig, which had photos showing the details on what you had done, but I can't find that now. Could you please give us that link again?
