Many thanks to Greg, Karen and family for hosting a great day.

Also to Calm and GJ for demo'ing in the hot light of turners' scrutiny.

And to TL for mags and cake and Allan for the blackwood.

    It was a great day for learning and trading cracks ;-}
    Cheers, Ern

A great day was had by all, cheerfull banter from the crowd.
Calm did a very good job demoing under incoming banter, the usuall chatter between ken and and Ern and John doing their bit for all to learn from.

Greg and family put on a great day . The weather held of till the end when the rain started.

Pictures will follow as there was cameras a plenty

A big thank you to Greg and his family for opening their house and hearts and allowing such a ragged bunch of reprobates to take over their back yard for a Sunday afternoon of learning and laughs. It was an honor for me to stand next to the Weird and Wonderful one and give a demo of my limited understanding of the Escoulen Chuck. It was great fun trading jibes with Ken and as well as other members of the peanut gallery. I hope the viewers had as much fun watching the demo as I had giving it.

I think I'll just push this lathe over into the shade.

These days don't just happen because of one person.

DJ helped me move the lathe to where it could be seen, and back. He brought his moving trolley and mini lathe and gave me some good advice on using some of my stuff - so thanks DJ, much appreciated

A special thanks to and Ken, the comedy duo who manage to argue over just about anything; we quickly realised to latch on to the things they did NOT argue about, as that meant there was no other possible or safe way to do it. (otherwise they would have argued about it ).

David, thanks for taking all the heckling from the crowd in good spirit. A great demo of turning a salt shaker.

Grumpy John, thanks for bringing the wobbly chuck, it is fascinating to watch that thing in action.

Ern gave a great discussion on sanding and finishing a piece, we all learned a bit there I reckon.

Anyway, it was a pleasure to have you all over. I hope the new faces enjoyed themselves and got some value from the day. sally the labrador vacuumed up after the last visitors left. The shop was cleaned and everything put away within an hour or so, pretty easy cleanup. There was a green coffee cup left here by someone.

Here are the pics I took:

Well I had a great day, thank you Greg and Karen.

The demos were excellent and informative, some of the best displays I have seen.

I came straight home and tried the shearing cut and ripped a huge gouge straight trough my bowl. I guess I didn't pay as much attention as I thought I did, I'll work it out with more practice

I'll post some photos as soon as I work out how to get them off the iphone

Thanks for a great day Greg and all the demonstrators

Great day. Good to see everyone and also meet a few new faces. The Wobbly chuck was fascinating. Would love to have a play with one some time. (Maybe not with a crowd of hecklers watching. Grumpy did a great job.) I scored some wood and a pair of bar clamps that I will put to good use.

There was still some Chocolate ripple cake left. I think I'll make a smaller one next time.

Thanks Groggy and demonstrators for a great day. Despite not really being into tuning it is always good to learn a few new things. Some of the discussions about rubbing the bevels and sharpening profiles went a little over my head but I am sure that it will make more sense when I start to play.

Quite keen to try my hand at a few pepper grinders now. I liked the contemporary profile of Grumpy Johns and as there is no bead work it may be worth a go. Good tips by Calm on drilling out the grinder which I will have to try. Now I know that I should be pushing the tail stock and not winding.

Tea Lady .... thanks for the mags ..... there were a few good articles there ...... luckily they were the furniture mags and not as popular as the turning mags.

    Thanks again Groggy!

Thanks for the compliment, I figure the less detail there is the easier it is to make a matching pair . I've attached a pdf of the peppermill, you'll have to download a diagram for the internal dimensions from Jim Carroll's site if you are using the crushgrind mechanism.

    Hi,

Thanks to Groggy and the demonstrators for a very interesting day. I did have to leave early, however I did learn a few things. Not being a turner at all (I don't own a lathe) much of what was discussed was very out of my area, but it was great putting forum names to some faces and seeing the enthusiasm and passion you all have for your art form.

I am sorry to say I still can't quite fathom the fascination with turning Maybe when I get sick of square legs on furniture it might come to me

Edit - thanks to Tea Lady for a wood review magazine with article on tuning up table saws, I had not seen that one, and some interesting info I am sure to put to use.

    Thanks again all

    Cheers
    Jason

    Another great day

I reckon Dave, Grumpy John and Ern should have been paid enormous
appearance fees because of the hecklers. Yes, you know who you are.

But then the lively audience should have paid an admission fee because
the banter between the demonstrators was top shelf and was a stage
    show in itself.

Thanks to Greg, Karen and family for their hospitality and Tea Lady for
    her choccy ripple cake.

Thanks Grumpy John. I still have some older pepper grinder mechanisms so the article will be spot on. The form looks quite good .... whilst I can see the skill in producing the traditional form there is something pleasing about breaking away from the expected shape.
