I say that you are posted on "esty". Is it worth the effort to join? Do you have suggestions for a beginner in the art of selling on the net?

Try your own web site. Also do a search for local galleries with web sites.

Ive had a crack a the etsy thing. its probably the easiest thing for a beginner to start out with....

but kinda lost interest after selling one pen in the first week and nothing since. . but you being from the other side of the ditch might have better luck

I think its like anything...the more you work at it the better you do. The people that seem to do well do a lot of promoting, on etsy and other places.

The only thing you need to do is register with etsy and setup a paypal account (which is probably the easiest thing to do no matter how you go about selling on the net, because it lets customers pay with credit cards.)

yeah Ebay and to a lesser extent Etsy and good for exposure in terms of lots of people use and will get to see yr work. Beyond that its supply and demand, Brown dog, i notice u only have pens, there s several penmakers on etsy so if you had a wider product range maybe yr get more inetrest. I have found etsy tends to go in stops and starts, sometimes i have had no sales for 6 weeks or more but over the last year have had over 50 sales and am catering for a nice niche

Myturn, u just gotta give it a go mate, selling online is the same as selling anywhere, if people want stuff and u can get it in front of them then they will probably buy it..i'd have a think about what yr offering in terms of what else is avilable

having yr own site is good but u need sites like ebay and etsy to help drive people to it..

So your the Spindle Maker ....when I first started on Etsy I searched for people using Aussie timbers....you were the only one I could find. I think I even asked the question in the etsy forum and mentioned you as the only one I could find.

i notice u only have pens, there s several penmakers on etsy so if you had a wider product range maybe yr get more inetrest

I am workin on it . just keep getting side traked.

I also considered finding a niche....your right there are quite a few Pen makers on etsy...but as far as I am aware Im the only one specialising in Aussie timbers , though I do agree I need to get a couple more things up and see how they go.

ON the postage issue, australia post is the best way for smaller items. In support of small business they have however raised thieir costs in recent times and you can get a leaflet form yr local PO on postage costs both within Australia and overseas, mainly the US. I buy their post boxes and packs in bulk, saves a few bucks and u gotta sign a customs dec to send stuff overseas and provide ID, just in case you are a terrorist.

In Oz its not too bad but to the US it's gotten a bit pricy recently. I sent a 1.4 kg box to Utah last week that cost 35 AUD.

Its good to have yr own site but then you gotta drive people to it via linking and other forms of exposure. Alos registering for paypal is a good option as its the main way poeple can pay you besides direct deposit within australia.

Browndog, yes I am spindlemaker, its been going well but I find i have to update things regularly to try and maintain my niche and find other ways of getting exposure, I have an add in yarn magazine for spinners and thats been good.

I am building up the standard woodturnings and may launch a 2nd shop soon, just trying to suss out what i can make thats not the same as the rest.

The aussie woods thing is good, i get a lot of feedback about the timber, i find i ahve to put a fair bit of time and effort and some $ into keeping up a good supply of stock, along with drying and prep techniques..
