    Default how deep for fence

Hi just finished setting out a 30m fence and going to hire a post hole borer tomorrow to do some digging, how deep is deep enough, its in clay and the posts are 2m long, I have seen a lot of fences sagging over so what would be a good depth?

if you go under about 550mm the fence is likely to lean when the soil gets wet and the strong winds blow

The fencer's "Rule of Thumb" is... 1/3 of the total post length.

(More, if it'll see lateral loads, such as it'll be used as a fence strainer or have a gate hanging off it.)
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

2' (600mm) is minimum you want to go. corner posts and gate posts realy need to be 2'6" (750mm) and stayed along the fence line in every direction the wire comes from not streight into the padock. minimum stay length is 2m otherwise they may lever the post outof the ground.

let us know how you went.
