Default Some Aussie Cedar and Rock Maple

Again, trying something different. This time there are a few WIP pictures that show the layout of the maple before cutting. Also, after cutting on the bandsaw, there is a picture of the glue up of the veneer strips. After glueing, the pieces need to be sized to one thickness before being mitred and rebated to accept the base.
With this box I decided to give the box sides a slight angle so that it would create a feature where the lid is opened on the front. These sloped sides were created after the box was made and glued. The angled sides allow the top edge to be nice and slim yet still give the box good strength..( I hope)
The dowel inserts in the mitres are there to provide a little strength to the joint, but more as a feature for the eye to catch.
The lid also has some fine veneer strands in the design but here, Mother Nature dictated that the inserts should follow the grain in the cedar. For me, the lid works. It is simple and I think it contrasts well with the rock maple.
The box is finished with wipe on poly, then rubbed back with EEE and finally waxed and polished.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Beautiful work, Ruddy. I guess shaping the angled sides would have been a challenge. What are the veneer strips made from? They work well.

Wow Ruddy. The design simply becomes more striking. The cedar top with the fine lines following the grain - oh yeah, it's got the zing in it. It all melds well together, especially the shaping around the handle.

    Hi Alex,
The black veneer strips are from a small amount of Macasser Ebony veneer I have. I wanted to get the contrast with the Rock Maple. The dowel plugs were turned from a small piece of Queen Ebony ( Solomon Islands) that I picked up at the last Wood Show in Sydney.

Quite amazing, Sir Rudd. Can I ask how you cut & filled the inlay lines?

    Hardenfast...
The waves are cut on a bandsaw, just have to make sure you keep the cut happening without stopping.
The infill is a strip of veneer glued in between and clamped.

Love it. Excellent work. I think I'll have to try one like it. What's that old saying? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or something like that.
