My first box
This is my first box that I have made.
I did it for my year 10 design project.
It is designed to be used as a storage box for my pen collection.
I'm into pen turning, and didn't have anything to put my nice pens in.
I was involved in the pen swap earlier this year, so have started a pen collection.
First we had to design and document the project and then make it.
I chose and bought the timbers myself as my school only provided radiata pine.
I would like to thank enfield_guy for assisting with the cutting and thicknessing
of the camphor laurel (as my school didn't have a band saw big enough to cut it with)
I got the timber at the Timber and Working with wood show this year, but we didn't have anything big enough to slice it up, and neither did the school.
He also kindly gave me some of his silky oak. Over night after he cut the camphor laurel, the thinner boards that I planned on using
for the back and draw fronts warped and was unable to be used.
It is Camphor laurel top, base and sides. The drawer fronts and carcasses, and the back are silky oak.
The knobs are hand turned from a pen blank I got in the pen swap, they are black walnut from USA
The box was sanded to 1500 grit and wiped over with danish oil with orange oil between each coat and 2 coats of wipe-on
poly high gloss.Josie :P :)

That is stunning! Well done! You are a craftsman!
...but tell us more, please.
What school?
What grade did you get for the project?
Your workmanship makes me feel good just looking at it. Congratulations!

Congratulations on a very fine piece of work. Nice selection of timber, good proportions, and you also had a nice learning experience of co-operation and team work with the "enfield guy". What a great way to do a year 10 design project.

Splendid work Josie. You clearly have talent and should be quite proud of your efforts.
I would be more than happy to help again if so desired.
Cheers

thanks for all your kind comments.
my teacher tends to agree with the forum members.
I got an A+ and the highest mark in my year level.
much to the disappointment of all the boys. they were beaten again.
there is an award each year and this will be the third year that i have taken out this award.
i attend one of the state high schools so it's good to see we all get the opportunity to learn a skill we enjoy.Josie :P :)

You obviously have good design and making skills. Can I suggest that while you are young and have lots of imagination, work on developing your design skills - try some 'way out' stuff. It won't all be successful, but you'll develop your own original style. Much harder to do when you're older.

Well done Josie, what are the dimensions of the box. Hard to judge its size from the pictures.
Reality is no background music.

For me this is the most enjoyable post I have seen on this forum for some time. To see such a young person produce this standard of work while battling the conflict of demands for study in other subjects is wonderful. It would be great if more people of your generation had the confidence and self-assuredness to do the same. Keep up the good work, I have little doubt you will succeed in future endeavours.
Regards
Greg
