A box in a hurry - Cheating style!
I have been really impressed with the boxes I have seen on this forum. Wendy's latest boxes "in a hurry" are excellent, especially the camhor one.
Last year my daughter rang me up one Wednesday about lunch time and asked me to make her a "box" (as a treasure chest for a gift) It turned out she wanted one with a curved top and needed it by Thursday evening! Oh and Dad I want it stained and varnished! I managed to get it done by 11pm Thursday. Sorry no pics
Determined never to get caught out again I bought a couple of unfinished or raw wooden gift boxes from the Reject Shop. The largest one was $6 and the medium one $4 and put them away just in case.
It turned out that I was the one who needed it. Our principal at school was leaving and I decided to make him a presentation gavel but was fast running out of time. So instead of making a box to put the gavel in, it was the $6 gift box. I cut it down to reduce the height, put it all back together and finished it with a gel stain and lacquer and then made a shaped felt insert to hold the gavel.
It was quite amazing how so many people said "What a lovely box"!
How can we woodies ever compete when these things can be made, shipped to Aussie and sold at a profit????
I have included some pics. (The gavel was turned from Tiger Myrtle)
I enjoy reading your posts and seeing pics of your combined works,
Chipman

Wow - great work for such a short time to get it done! Shame you don't have pictures of your box for your daughter, but when you are working to a very tight timeline!!
Actually, that's a good idea, to have a couple of boxes stashed away ready for emergencies like this.
cheers

Sounds like a great Idea but when I get a few made some one buys them and I have to start again.

Cheap way of buying parts
That is right ARTME sometimes the cheapest way to buy parts is to buy the whole thing and salvage the bits you want. Several times, I have bought a whole decorative clock and extracted the movement and surrounds and mounted it on a nice wooden base to make the clock I wanted. I call it value adding!
Thanks for the comments everyone,
Chipman
