Default Brass Hinges - getting the brushed look?

    Hi all,

I've managed to get thousands of solid brass hinges in exceptional quality and various sizes. Thick, meaty and luxurious - exactly what my hair isn't.

Doing the fine-file, sandpaper, buff thing brings them to a glorious shine in no time, but I'm after a "brushed" look and not really sure where to start.

Some of my boxes, the cheaper ones, would benefit from having a brushed look hinge as they are painted. The default hinges from the factory are free of any finish and need refinishing before use (though not very much at all). I don't want shiny and reflective - flat and brassy is nice.... but I cant think of how its done.

I've tried a few ways, but I'm getting inferior results. Any hints?

Fine Scotchbrite wheel, works on Brass, SS and Ally. Very quick and very nice.

Wheels are better than the discs because the wheels can get into nooks and crannies much better

    Also excellent on light rust.

I have the 200mm 6A 3M Wheel maroon wheel on the bottom of page 47 on this PDF.

Wow - I was given it and an 8" grinder for nothing!

I also have one of these from Abrasiflex, very similar to the 3M Wheel

From memory the 200mm wheel it cost about $35 so the smaller one should be cheaper.
