    Default Brass rod hinge help

I am currently in the middle of making a box and the lids will rotate open from the corners using a piece of brass rod as the hinge. The rod I have got it 6mm but if i drill with a 6mm bit the hole is way to tight and if I use a 6.5mm drill bit the hole is way to loose. How can I make it fit very well and run smoothly? I have thought about setting another piece of brass into the lid so that the brass rod runs on a brass plate instead of on the timber, but I cannot get hold of any brass plate. Does anyone have any other ideas how I can do it?

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

Brass is soft, just sand it until it fits perfectly.

Spin the brass rod in your drill while you hold the fine sandpaper against it and like Munruben says you will reduce it to the perfect fit.

I have done that now, thanks for the idea, got 3 out of 4 fitting so far. I also found, once it was almost fitting perfect, pushing the rod into the hole while it was spinning in the drill helped to give it a good fit.

I'd run the rod in a brass tube sleeve. Try your local hobby shop for a size that fits the rod you have.
If you run the brass rod in wood, it might be tight now, but it will eventually become loose.

I agree with Alex.....a brass sleeve is the way to go. Most good hobby shops have a selection of brass rods and brass tubes that will make ideal hinges .

i have use 5mm rod, i think that i bought it as braising rod. from the same shop they sold drill bits in 0.1 mm increments (??spelling) 5.1 mm works a treat!!! personally i avoid metalwork stuff but there shop can be good places for wood workers to visit!
    its only short one end!!

Like this. There are sleeves in the lid & the end of the box, and the brass rod fits inside them.

How did you get the staves to fit together so neatly? Did you use some calculation like number of staves equals an angle in degrees. (not sure if I explained it right but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.) I want my next curved box staves to fit as nice as yours. Looking forward to more photos of this box.

The attached spreadsheet helps you calculate the angles & dimensions of the staves.
There's an article about them in the latest AWR.
