I found out freight costs today, $600 delivered to Wollongong for a cage that if loaded fully would have 500kg of timber in it. So if 5 people were to participate they would pay $120 each and get 100kg of timber. Over to those who are interested for comment. What you have to remember is that everyone would need to get together and decide what they were to have from the shipment as these are offcuts, not set lengths. I see that as the only problem.

The solution is simple, albeit a bit lengthy: the 5 people sit around the load with pen and paper and dutch auction among themselves each piece/small lot of same size pieces. This ensures that everybody gets exactly what he wants at the price he deems fair. When all the pieces are allocated, the total amount collected is compared to the total amount paid and the difference is split equally.

ETA: I just noticed that two weeks have passed without action, so this might be irrelevant now... This is my first foray in the box making forum, because I have just bought a similar amount of wood from a not so dissimilar scheme. Best wishes!

My pleasure Chris. I was hoping you would get it today. Make sure you show us some pics of whatever it is you end up making.

Surely we should be able to work out a way of getting this stuff east at a cheap rate. Any more interest in Mini's idea? Anyone got any other ideas?

I have been told that if about one tonne is stacked on a 1200 x 1200 pallet a transport company should charge about $300, but it is only hearsay. Might be worth investigating.

I might have to find out if any of the companies around us would take one east. You guys would have to pick it up and distribute it fairly. That is if Burnsy hasn't burnt it all first

I'm up for it, to see how the idea works. Pat expressed interest and is near me, anyone else? I will arrange all the freight logistics etc as I am familiar with what is needed. Having said all that if there is a cheaper alternative use that. The idea of stacking it on a pallet may not work as these are off cuts and little bits don't stay on pallets unless shrink wrapped and even then present a problem. The pallet has to be strapped to a truck and strapping a pallet of that nature would be very difficult if not impossible. The only way around that is the truck must have side gates to restrain the pallet.

In relation to what? The general transport industry uses pallets and nothing else as they are stackable. Cages take up too much room when empty. I guess that is what you meant??
