What Hinges do you prefer and where to buy?
Wondering what Hinges do you prefer for small boxes, which are the hardest to fit or best for purpose and where to ECONOMICALLY buy?
I don't think i want to spend $60-70 per set s i have seen some advertised.
Barrel hinges look like the disappear which I like and quadrant hinges are very elegant and my favourite looking but I hear are a nightmare to fit.

Hi DSEL74,
For small boxes, I like to use 90 degree stop hinges. They are so much better than straight butt hinges and are easy to fit. I buy them from Veneer Inlay Australia in Sydney. Excellent service. They are about $17.00/pair from memory.
For larger boxes, I think it's hard to go past Quadrant hinges. Yes they are harder to fit, but they look a million dollars. Anton Gerner sells nice ones, with square edges. Veneer inlay sells them also, but they have rounded edges, suitable for use with a router.
Then there are strap hinges, which are like quadrants without the stay. Veneer inlay has them too.
Hope that helps,
Regards,
Rob

G'day DSEL74
My #1 choice are Solid Brass Quadrants, once you have worked out a process and made a couple of jigs they are OK to fit.
Practice on some scrap pieces until you feel confident to do the real deal.
Other than that Solid Brass Butt hinges are good providing they are the right size for the job.
Too small and they look weak to large and they look plain ugly.
By the By 4 screws and much easier to set than the 6.
Cheers
Steve

Thanks for the replies fellas.
Seems you can buy the hinges at about a quarter of the price from USA and few only a few cents if you order for china direct anyone tried from other than local sources?
I have seen some bootstrap hinges that have 110deg stops are they any good?

Hi again,
Just remember that you get what you pay for. Hinges make the box in many cases, they are not an item to scrimp over. Remember also that there's a significant difference between solid brass and cheap brass plating.
If you want to buy from OS, someone like Brusso is where I'd go.
Regards,
Rob

My preference for boxes that don't have to open to 180 deg. is the SmartHinge by Andrew Crawford. They aren't cheap, (although they have come down a bit recently) but compared to other quality hinges they're not too expensive either. For me the value comes in their quality and the speed of installation. - time is money.

I've just put my first (proper) box together and was wanting to ask the same question - just coming along for the ride now
