    Default new idea

I've started a new box and got the bulk of the timber cut and prepared yesterday afternoon.!

    American ash, and Iroko.

The original idea has crashed, I intended to make a three colour sandwich at each mitred corner but to get a squared up joint it would be better if the joint was made up of 4 pieces, two at 2mm thick and two at 1mm thick.

However all is not wasted with present prepared timber because I intend to use those pieces on another new idea on this project. (to follow)

Progress to date is instead of my usual form of clamping the pieces awaiting glue to set I have relied entirely on masking tape as per photograph.
(It did help in this instance because thickness of timber (ash) is 14mm.)

So box is pictured with glue applied and left to set as per pic. below.

This method of gluing up a box was demonstrated to me on that Australian visit and seeing AlexS in action.

Had another panic attack and changed the design again.

So cut up some ash into small pieces (for the lid!)

and then got hold of my dwindling supply of wenge.

Which I had cut using that jig again, another picture because this one I reckon is clearer than previous examples shown.

And then started gluing up again:

I do have intentions to work some more decoration to the lid.

I was able to get back to this box yesterday (a fifteen day break from the project) and complete the box as per pictures below.

Regret it was not a 100% success because the side beadings/decorations to the lid are not even in dimensions. The right hand side is most probably 3mm whilst the left is 4mm, and it shows when you see it in the flesh.

The reason I think was because of the long break in returning to the project and loosing my track and forgetting compensations needed to complete.

However I like the design and I intend to make some more on this theme.

    Thanks for looking.

I like the design. Just enough detail to give it some character, not so much that it's flashy. Simple but elegant.

FWIW: I find that no matter how diligent I am with measuring, there's always one piece that's wrong. We're all in the same boat there!

Very nice contrast of timber and wenges. Elegant appearance. Thumbs up for me on this box for sure.
