    Default Punters Box

Hey everyone. My father in-law likes to have a flutter on the horses, and asked me to make him a box to keep his TAB tickets, along with other horse racing stuff in. So here it is. Cypres Pine sides with Qld Maple lid. The Scroll saw cut out of the Gee Gee's is PNG Rosewood + Rosewood splines. 10 coates of Shellac, with a light cut back with 600 grit paper between coates, then after final coat, burnished with 0000 steel wool, then 2 coates of Traditional Wax. Cheers.

That should do the job nicely. Looks great.

Nice work. The effort put into finishing has paid off. Nice tight mitres too.

    Default Cyprus Pine looks terrific

I've been wondering how cyprus pine would look when used for a box. Your box looks terrific and I am now inspired to find some nice cyprus for a box of my own.

Nice work indeed. Cyprus pine is great to work with and turns well too. You have achieved a really nice finish. Congratulations.

Thats a nice piece of work. I have a coupleof questions if you dont mind:
-What sort of saw did you use for cutting the mitres
-Did the cypress start out fairly light coloured. I am impressed by the depth of colour that you got from the shellac and wax

Hey ClintO. Sorry for the late reply. I usually hang out over on the Pen Making forums. Anyway. The saw blade I use for all my spline work is an Italian blade called ... Qualita model LUI1E 0100 low noise, Silent cutting saw blade. It is SOoooooo quiet. It cuts & cleans at the same time. NOT cheap, about $120 from memory. I got it fron Gregory Machinery Brisbane, at the Working With Wood Show, in May this year. It macke perfect spline cuts every time. I have made a great jig for box splines, so each cut is perfect. Re- The Cypress Pine. I had to hunt through the timber yards stock to get some nice boards, all tongue in groove, but with lots of grain features. I drive the blokes nuts when I turn up at the timber yard. They run when they see me coming, haha.
