Rubber bands as clamps
I am currently reading Basic Box Making by Doug Stowe. In making some of his boxes he uses big rubber bands to clamp the boxes together whilst the glue dries. These rubber bands are big enough to clamp a box 10"x8"x5".
I have never seen rubber bands this big, does someone have any ideas on where to get these?
BTW Can recommend the book.

G'day Big Shed,
You can order "Superior" brand rubber bands from a Stationery store or your newsagent. They come in really big sizes like Doug uses...I can call hime by his first name, "cos he answered my email......the other way is to get a kiddie size bike tube and cut it at an angle through the tube. I might have to draw that out later in the night, as it doesn't explain easily without pics,

I bought my set from Woodcraft. They are intended for exactly this purpose. Had my doubts at first, but now I really like them.

You're not supposed to swim in it, you're supposed to drink it
No, haven't got the DVD, only the book, borrowed it from the library. They bought it in because I requested it as an inter-library loan. Thought I'd have a look at it before I spend my hard-earned. Seems well worth having. I have his other book on box making, Complete Illustrated Guide to Box Making. I have learned a lot from this guy.

rubber bands
s'long as you remember to place the rubber band EVENLY around the box, else you could have more tension in some parts of the band than others and that would be like tightening the clamps unevenly...
cheers

For those of you that do not have Doug's DVD.... Get it! Well worth whatever price you have to pay. I watch it at least once a week and learn something new during each pass.Cheers,

An alternative to rubber bands?
Has anyone heard of or tried using plastic cling wrap from the kitchen as a clamp? (you know the clear stuff used to wrap sandwiches or seal off a bowl of salad.) I see many pallets of goods delivered behind here wrapped in a similar fashion. It seems to do a good job of holding everything together. (the industrial wrap is a wider and thicker than the kitchen wrap.)
Reasons I think it might be good:
1. It's much wider than a single rubber band.
2. A roll of it can be used to wrap any size from a small box up to a desk size.
3. It sticks to itself so you just wrap it around and around, tighter with each wrap if you want...
4. It's cheap and easily found.
What do ya' think? WOuld that work? I think I may have seen the idea in a magazine or book somewhere, but I'm not sure.“When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think...that a time is to come when those (heirlooms) will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, ‘See! This our father did for us.’ “ --John Ruskin. Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide, 1923 Theo Audel & CO. New York.
