Walnut rack case
Hey everybody I am new here and am only an amateur wood worker (at best) so please be patient with me.
I am looking at a LARGE pile of rough cut walnut boards of varying lengths, widths and thickness and DYING to do something with it. It is all 3/4" or more thick and I would like to get one down to 1/2" to save on weight. I do have access to planer, joiner, table saw, router, biscuit saw, etc.
My question is this: Is it a silly idea to plane a board like this down to 1/2"? or would that cause strength issues? The box will 20" Tall, 20" wide and 12-14" deep and hold 30lbs in a metal rack system. I was thinking of useing dovetails but I think biscuits will work better so I can round over the edges. any thoughts?
What kind of bracing (besides the internal metal system) might I need to conside>
I included a picture for clarification, it is the piece on top of the speakers I will be reproducing, just a little larger. It will have front and back covers as well.
Thanks a lot!
Dale

Hi there Dale,
Welcome to the forum. The gurus for amps etc hang out in the Musical instruments section. I suggest you post a link there as you will have more luck,"We must never become callous. Hi Dale,
Just to clarify, is it a cabinet for your rack-mount gear that you intend to build? If so, 30 pounds isn't a great deal of weight and I think you could get by nicely with 1/2" stock. Walnut is pretty strong after all. Bicuits will indeed work but, if you are capable of dovetails, it would make for a nicer (and stronger) cabinet. Dovetailed cabinet joints can certainly be rounded over and actually look very nice this way. I build guitar amps and always employ some form of rounded over dovetail joint on my cabinets. Here are some examples to give you ideas. Black walnut, bloodwood, and bubinga. The bubinga cabinet has a modified "dovetail" that looks very custom. PM me if you have any specific questions. Always happy to help out a musician.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions sebas. I will copy it over there.
You have some beautiful stuff there Cisco! Love that modified dovetail too. I don't have the skills for anything that nice, but I do have a nice dovetail jig that is so easy I don't see why not use it this!
This is going to be a 4 space rack for my bass amp. The walnut I have is 4 quarter (1" thick) and what I am thinking now is to run one of these boards through the band saw giving me less than 1/2" before any other sanding, planing etc. I'm thinking some bracing might not be a bad idea, but being my first project like this a little curious as to where the high stress points might be.

G'day Dale and welcome to the show.
I envy your acces to that Walnut. Make a good job of it and it will last a lifetime. As Cisco says, dovetails are the way to go. Good joinery will save you many hassles in future.
