I have found that silicon will get pretty deep into the surface of the timber and sanding can actually spread it and maybe even make it worse. I hate the stuff and still reckon a silicon wash should fix the problem. Go to a paint shop that sells to the automotive trade. They hate it too, and you should be able to get a little bit, if not try the local panel shop. I'm sure one of them will give you a little bit.
