    Question Question: Steel Wool

This is probably a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. Some of the finishing techniques I've seen advise to use #0000 Steel Wool as part of the cutting back/rubbing out of the finish.

What is #0000 Steel Wool sold as in Oz and where do I get it? I assume that I can't really go down to my local supermarket to buy this in the cleaning aisle but I've heard that the square padded steel abrasive cleaners might do the job. Does anyone know if this is true or which brands might be effective?????

No, its not true. Possibly you might get by with a fine 3M abrasive pad, but that would be closer to a 000 grade.

Liberon 0000 is sold here, and another brand whose name escapes me. I'm a few thousand km's from my shop right now, I can give you the other name tomorrow.

Possibly u-beaut sells it, check the sponsor's site.

Carbatec and most of the WW suppliers sell the steel wool you are after. It comes in grades 0, 00, 000, 0000, with 0000 being the finest.

Warning, never use on bare timber as some of the metal can get caught in the grain and RUST.

Correct, but you can find it in the paint section of Bunnings.

Sturdy, that's right , it's at bunnings, in the paint section, been using it for years instead of sandpaper between coats of whatever, good for applying beeswax too...

    Hi Peter...

Can you please confirm that the 0000 can be had at Bunnings? Is that the Nunnawading store?

    Thanks

Greg, last year I bought 0, 00 & 0000 steel wool from Bunnings in Nunawading, and I have also seen it at Mitcham and Croydon stores so I presume most carry it. Funny thing is that I couldn't get 000.

The last lot I bought from Gustec in Bayswater as they were slightly cheaper and I was getting some other things as well.

BTW there is very little difference between 00, or 000 or 0000. For rubbing back french polish either 000 or 0000 is acceptable.
