    Default Secret "recipes" for finishing

    Hello all

I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread on peoples little recipes for different finishes. It would be very useful to document the little tricks we all use to get that special finish.

I am just new to this as most of my work to date has been carpentry and it usually gets painted. What I have found though by trial and error (and I take no credit for this as its likely been done before) is that a mix of 50/50 boiled linseed oil and poly is great for finishing just about anything.

It is fantastic on tools with wooden handles as not only does it rejuvenate the wood but it looks good for a much longer time than linseed alone. I have also used it on my workbench successfully. It is dead easy to apply with a rug and a little bit goes a long way.

I have also experimented with using stain in such a mix and that seemed to work allright too.

What little tricks does everyone else use? If there is a bit of a response to this the thread may serve as a great resource to us all.

    regards

    Marios

He's very giving of his time, extremely friendly and a real cool dude.Women love him, men envy him, rulers bow down to him. He is written about in poems, sung about in songs and spoken about in whispers lest others might hear and swoon. Oh yeah and he's very, very modest. and what is his book called? Yes he is very modest indeed, but also very powerful as well along with all his mates and Co. Just don't make him angry.

What? There's more to finishing than what is in his book? It'll take me a lifetime to get close to understanding what is in that one without "going beyond"!

Check out the video we shot of Neil at a Triton club meeting last year (in the video section of the forums - you might have to ask for someone to seed them) - it is in 4 parts and there is plenty of hints and tips right there.

Sorry I haven't got any more to add - everything I know about finishing is in (and came from) "the bible"

    All true ...

but a Polisher's final word ain't exactly the same as a "Finisher's" or "restorer's" final word' ... if I may suggest a difference or two.

And Marios is right ... there are many ways of skinning a cat, and it pays to listen and learn from a range of wise heads.

I have a copy of a French polisher's handbook published about a century ago, and it talks about ingredients no-one does any more.

I've got a couple of methods... but SSSH! They're secret! (Well you did ask! )

'Sides, I'm a turner and I suspect that finishes that involve old hacksaw blades, ball-peen hammers a gas-axe and/or wire brushes aren't exactly what you're asking about.

Dang! Did I just give away my methods?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
