    Question Shellac ( again)

Shellac ahs been used for hundreds of years as a finish, nowadays we use 100% methylated spirit to desolve the shellac. I was just wondering what was used all those years ago?

Ethanol or pure alcohol (at least as pure as they could get it then) and it was pure, no denaturant put in it so it couldn't be drinked.
