    What style base?
    Why a set neck?
Many basses have bolt on necks.
If you hve not much experience, a bolt on is technically much easier as the rout is flat bottom. For set neck you need a tenon join. If the neck joint is wrong or the neck is wrong, twists etc a set neck is tricky to get apart.

I played in bands for 40 years and the best sounding basses I ever heard were the fender precision bass. The telecaster bass also had a great sound. These basses are the essence of simplicity.

LOOK HERE for the fender bass pocket specs

Look at Fender, Wawrick, Musicman, yamaha, ibanez and see what you can find with a set neck.

Alembic probably the finest basses around use neck through construction and again technically easier than a set neck but loses some of the physical advantages of the bolt on. They reckon the neck through has more sustain better tone. The neck through is popular for 5 and 6 string basses.

well I have a good amount of experience building guitars and I have done one with a set neck where the tennon was about a little over a inch deep but my friend came to me wanting basically a p bass with a set neck so just wondering about how deep I should make it and if I could do it without a ange to componsate for the p bass bridge.

Fender stuff is the essence of simplicity isn't it? All the Fender neck pockets are 5/8" deep from memory. The P-bass neck pocket looks the same shape as the Strat pocket. Does the Tele bass have a squared off pocket like the 6 string Tele?

As far as I know bass pockets are all the same. P J or Tele bass. I often wondered why they made the tele and strat pockets different. I can't see a reason.
