at one stage the quality of posts took a bit of a dive - seemed to be way too much meaningless banter and political discussions about rights and wrongs in the forestry industry in tasmania
every so often i do come by and usually find interesting things to look at such as this ancient threadray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

The MOP piece for the logo arrived, along with the "bling" for the Southern Cross (see plans).
I've spent this week reworking the plans, especially the contour plan for the body carving.
I also drew a mockup of the neck I purchased and added it to the side elevation view of the body to calculate neck angle. I paid special attention to the height of the nut and the bridge (screwed up a couple of winds to allow up and down adjustments on setup. It turns out to be an exact 3 degrees.
I tracked down the alignment of the tune-o-matic bridge and stoppiece and confirm the +/- 1/16" (1.5875mm). The position and dimensions of the bridge and stop-piece mounting is included on the contours layout. I will use a couple of these points to screw the template to the top and back for routing the contours.
I installed a woodworking vice onto my workbench this weekend. I have to get the updated contours etc printed on A1 during the week. I'll buy the MDF and cut the templates next week.
Updated plans attached.

Re: ES-335 Copy - Tassy Blackwood
According to my plans and timber blanks, the edge thickness of my guitar will only be 25mm. 45 total thickness less 10mm per side of arching.
I might have trouble getting the pots in...
Guidance? Opinions?

Taking account of the top carve long shaft or short shaft pots are available. If it is necessary to use the short shafts the top can be 'spot' routed from the inside to leave about 1/4' thickness where the pot shaft will go.''Also some like to do this in such a way as to make the shaft protrude from the top surface at right angles to the carve at that point rather than 'straight up & down'.
I hope this is on topic. I'm sorry if it isn't - I was browsing quickli.
Regards, Rob.

I had a go at the MOP headstock logo over weekend and stuffed it up. Logo too fine for me and my tools.
Afterwards found John Duff at LABEL EXTREME in VIC who is now laser cutting my logo design in white MOP and installing it for me for a very reasonable price. Love outsourcing to a pro when necessary.

Thanks Mark, it's all ready to head back to you tomorrow.
Just as point of interest, I use rotary cutting. In your case because of the internal angles in the 'M', I used a 0.3mm bit to keep the sharp detail. Sometimes I get lucky and get away with a bigger bit, but often it's the .3mm
I'm not sure if pearl can be cut on a laser, I suspect that the pearl would tend to 'explode' from the heat of the laser. I don't have one, so I don't know if it's possible, but I find the rotary does a great job of it.
I'm sure someone has tried a laser somewhere!

Received my neck back. Love the logo. Added the rhinestones to show final idea.

I did the rough routing on the inside yesterday. 5mm depth on the top and 10mm on the bottom. I didn't use a guide for this so a little rough at the edges but since this will all be hidden on the inside...
