Sigh.
First picture from previous post is taken from the entrance mentioned in the post before. This picture shows 2 small pens leading into the crush and then the loading ramp which is only able to load into a trailer. The gate between these 2 pens is dead in line with the view on the left side of the opening. This is picture is mainly to show that most of the sides of the pens are cobbled together old gates and weldmesh. There are some bits here that have rails on them. I have some way to go with these.
Next picture shows the crush from the side. The main crush gate has a weldmesh panel on it. This panel hooks on when needed for sheep and can be removed for cattle. The other side gate can have a similar panel added. All other gates have weldmesh welded on.
The picture below shows the bail gate from inside the crush. I added the 2 vertical (rust coloured) pieces to reduce the side gaps when the bail is closed. Calves could get thru this gap. Yes they could be better centered. I changed the design slightly to make it stronger. Actually the bail gate does not have weldmesh welded on. I will just lean a bit up when required.
The concrete is falling apart, assisted by the heavily rusted strips that were buried in the concrete. One piece needs cutting off. I intend to concrete footings on all uprights. The concrete can then do whatever it wants.

The last picture. The front of the crush. The gates either side replace years of cobbled up junk. I made them from existing gates which needed a lot of work. One had to be shortened and the other lengthened as well. These gates are hinged from the bail gate uprights. They end at the ramp. There is a small gate hinged to the right hand one to block off access to the ramp. The length of pipe on the ground is just lying there where I left it. I was testing the bail gate structure to see how well it is attached to the concrete. The bail gate is not level. I will fix it with footings. Someone will probably notice that the ramp needs leveling.

Plan B was use timber logs.. Was not satisfied with plan B as I tried welding timber once and it never worked, strange material that...
I was told that someone invented a welder for wood, I think they called it a "TWIG welder"

Horse size poopa scoop
Hardly fine engineering but they're all metal so here they are.
SWMBO just bought a horse float so now she wants all the nick-nacks,
20L container for water, Luckily I had a spare under the house that I picked up from the side of the road
Next the giant Poopa Scoopa!
New they cost i$80, for something that looks Very ordinary - no better than my average efforts so I spent a couple of hours this arvo and knock these up.
The sturdy galv mesh I got from a skip at work and everything was scrap, side of the road or leftovers.
Adjustable length handle for the rake comes from an old mop.
Next thing is a hitch lock - anyone got any good ideas?

Hi Bob, good job on the picker uppperer. Regarding the hitch lock are you referring to the coupling? There are several commercial made ones,
have a look at Repco or trailer places. I can take some pictures in the morning of the commercially made one that I've got. It's made from about 30 X 10 flat bent in a U shape, there are 2 slots for the top bar to go through and padlocked, with a bit of tube welded to the base of the U, that goes inside or under the ball if it's fitted to the car and float.

A neighbour showed up on the doorstep last night with an old metal housing belt sander, suggesting it has broken a gear tooth and asking whether I could fix it. (He tells me that the whole street knows that I'm the guy with the shed )
We've known him for nearly 20 years so couldn't really refuse as it sounded a simple job. Opening the machine up it was a little more than that - the whole gear was stripped (and the mating gear is a little suss). I suspect that it was started under load once too often and that just chewed up the gear (to be fair to my neighbour, he got it from his FIL's collection when things were tidied up so it was not positively known as a going concern).
Making up a replacement took a couple of hours - might have been quicker except that having a limited metal working background he was fascinated by the machines and what they did so we had to stop for explanations just about every time, along with explanations of what DP means and why the thread is UNF and not UNC and so on.

Not shown in the photo is the hex socket in the far end, made using the old standby of drilling a hole and then just hammering in a length of greased hex key.

Well, for that matter, I never cease to amaze me with what I am capable of.
Jobs like this do toss up interesting challenges. I still make unforced errors at times but learn enough from them to know how to do better next time.
I used to think that my machining skills were on par with those of a new apprentice. Perhaps I've finally made it to second year...
