toy/model drilling rig
This, my friends, is a Bucyrus Erie 22w cable-tool drilling rig.....and I want to make a model of it. My question is, how can you make gears/ cogs out of wood and what sort of wood. Can you buy them pre-made?
Cheers.

I'm sure I've seen them made in the toy or model making section,
similar to take of monster wheels for trucks & earth-moving machinery;
but also have a look in the wooden clock section too..
cheers, crowie

Hi Wireliner,
I cut my gears on my model locomotive (Peny-Darren) using coping saw, bandsaw and then filed and sanded. I used photocopies on the timber as my pattern. I used 19mm pine as my material.
Link to my old thread is attached.
Good luck
Regards
Keith

Thank you all for the replies. The rig is relatively easy to make (I hope) but the gears were always going to be the issue. High time I got some practice on my scroll saw then.
Thanks all.

My first wooden gear. Thanks to Keith 1, I followed your advice. It needs a little sanding etc. but not bad for a first try. This will be the bull reel.

Bullreel finished. This will determine to overall size of the model. I'll do some calculations and make the casing winch, spudding gear and bailing winch in a similar way.
Cheers.

Casing winch and spudding gear. I put the brake drum on to the casing gear purely because it looks good.
