The full set arrived today...over a week early!! Woohoo!!
They're not sharp out of the box and there's epic machining marks on the backs, but big deal...I expected that and have fixed much worse from other Stanley products.
None of them have that sharp edge y'all warned about. Perhaps a change in manufacturing process?
They've all had their protective gunk cleaned off and handles banged in with the hairspray trick and the rest of my night will be spent lapping the backs before I get to work on the 30deg bevels another day.
I'm starting low (with sandpaper on glass) at 180/240 and will work my way up to 2000 grit paper before the 6000 waterstone (and maybe a final stropping...I'm only just getting into that).
If my Katz Moses dovetail jig turns up as quickly, nobody will see me for weeks because I'll be firmly planted in the workshop making more of a messEvery time you make a typo, the errorists win.

Hi Everyone,
I actually bought this set of chisels from the Amazon USA store back in November and when they arrived I was very disappointed. I was expecting they would need flattening and possibly need grinding on the edges to improve them for cutting dovetails. But unfortunately as soon as I looked at them I could see that they weren't symmetric. The machining on all of the chisels was rough.

As you can see below, they looked really nice in the tool roll.

The next day I returned them to amazon. Time to start saving up for some Lie Nielsen chisels.
I would be interested to see some photos of what your sweetheart chisels are like.
Cheers

Those are shockers CB. I've had similar issues with Ashley Isles dovetail chisels where the blade (tanged version) wasnt even put in the handle square and was off-centre. Good idea saving for something a little more consistent in quality.

It was so frustrating JW. I had to wait a while before they arrived and I think I got my hopes up to much. I was really looking forward to having a matching set with a nice range of sizes. Never-mind, I will continue using the vintage chisels I have until I can get some LN chisels. Sorry to hear you have had a similar experience. Ive only heard good thing about Ashley Isles chisels previously.
