Where are the pens??
Where are the pens?
After a burst of very interesting displays of pens, from around the country, its become VERY quiet. I wonder why?
I suspect its NOT because you are short of interesting ideas or woods or skills, but rather you are short of TIME.
TIME is increasingly becoming a precious resource.
Many wood lovers myself included are missing such displays and urge you to submit something for comment.
Cheers, Euge

Yes, it has been noticeably quiet on thepen turning front lately. Maybe too cold in some sheds.
My penmaking has taken a bit of a turn in a different direction lately, so they are taking a lot longer. That coupled with my lack of spare time, means I am not producing many.
But......, I finished one this morning. I am just waiting for a break in the rain to take my camera gear down to the shed to get some pics. Look for a new thread tonight.Brad.

For me you are both correct. Time and Cold. -1 in my shed last night, can't wait to get the decking out the way so I can set the fire up and warm it up in there. On the time front I'll finally get a couple hours in the shed tonight but I'm currently turning a pepper mill out of the most amazing chunk of celery top. Counted 97 growth rings in a little over a 100mm square piece. Also I had turned a pen out of it but had run into issues so I will have to do it again

In the rest of my spare time during June I fixed up these titan chisels.

Thank you both Ironwood and PKroeze… makes sense .. the lack or time & cold temperatures making the shed or workshop less appealing.
Look forward to seeing your brilliant pens Ironwood.
And I can see the “issues” you mention PKroeze when turning pens across the grain like that. Yes, interesting and slow growth of 1 mm per year in that Celery Top. And a wonderful way you chose to show it. Must be very satisfying restoring old tools. They look great!

Yup - not only the cold but it's just damn dark and depressing.....
It has hit the time of year that I leave for work in the dark and return home in the dark. It certainly kills the motivation.....
I did manage to hit the saw and cut up a few blanks, so that will have to do to satisfy my wood itch at the moment.
Ringed gidgee, figured buloke and wriggly brigalow.....
I was accused of embellishing a bit on other social media by calling it 'wriggly' (that's not a proper wood term I was informed) but it's how it was marked on the pieces I bought, and it is certainly fitting in my eyes
Anyhoo, hopefully some more time soon in the
shed

Thanks for your explanation Gab. You are right, these short cold winter days are a turn off to going to a cold dark workshop.
Wow those are beautiful woods and blanks!! They should produce some spectacular pens. Cant wait to see them.

I hear the comments ,three times into hospital in the last week for me. Almost finished relocating my thirty yr old Vicmarc VL100 into a room in the workshop I can heat easily and well. The heater is the black element type on the floor with a thermostat as used by tradies.Production will come next week. Keep the faith fellas.

I'll be back soon, Euge. Busy organising some wall removals and a new kitchen, and then a bunch of pens (for the troops). The cold is not a problem here (in sunny Sydney - ha ha) but with my lathe outside in the open I can only work when it's not raining and the neighbor doesn't have washing out.
But our southerly busters are the best dust extraction system going
Cheers, Gary

Good onya Gary,
I look forward to seeing the interesting pens you come up with when the wind does not blow and when its dry and when you finish the kitchen.
Hey, speaking of "southerly busters" (I recall them when I lived in Sydney), there is a doozie sweeping across over the next few days, starting in SA and then Vic tonight. Wild winds and rain. Not pen making weather down here unless you are in a bunker.
Regards, Euge

It hasn't been raining and the neighbour didn't have his washing out, so my outdoors workshop has been back in business. Many thanks to Euge for his unusual timber blanks which I have finally started on. First up is one using Northern Minneritchie (one of the Acacia species) from 200km north of Brunnette Downs in the northern Territory. Pity it can't talk - would love to hear its history. Thanks, Euge.
Cheers, Gary H

Thanks Gary, I wondered what the wood would look like. I've only ever seen its end grain.
That wood was collected long ago when exploring the north for its flora. The stem collected of this Acacia was small but the wood was dense and fine. It had a curly red "minneritchie bark" like a few Acacia have, growing in the Kimberly NT and Qld.
Of course there are other Minneritchies (some are eucalypts), but most are Acacias (eg A. cyperophylla, A grasbyii) but this is not one of these.
Cheers, Euge
