Repairing Domino 500
My much-loved Domino developed a fault recently, with an electrical burning smell and some smoke coming out of the motor area. I’m part-way through building a cot for my soon-to-arrive grandson, and needed the domino to complete the job.
I dropped the tool into Sydney Tools to send it off for assessment and possible repair. I decided to simply replace it with a new one, because time isn’t on my side.
I am waiting on feedback from Festool about the repair cost. My question is, what would be a reasonable price I could expect for a second-hand, Festool repaired Domino? The sale price needs to be less than the repair price before the repair makes sense, clearly.
cheers,
ajw

If they tell you the parts, of which there aren't many, one could look them up here: Festool and Protool Spare Parts - IDEAL TOOLS
This would ensure the price they charge you is fair.
If the Domino were repaired officially by Festool, I'm not sure if it would even need to be disclosed. My experience is they tend to over service the thing and hand it back spick-and-span.
One could disclose its been refurbed?

The repair is around $350, so I’m going ahead with it. Now need to work out what a second hand unit is worth, and list it for sale on the forum when I get it back.

Just my humble opinion here, take it with a grain of salt.
A new unit, with warranty, in Systainer, with extras is $1850 (df-500-domino-joining-machine-in-systainer_576416) - and they're in stock so there is no "Ah but you can't get one right now" involved.
Assuming the repair involved wasn't something indicative of a future problem with the unit, IMO that can be ignored for the purpose of sale.
Now we get down to "How old is the machine". I'm assuming > 3 years, or you wouldn't have paid for the repair. But, is it "just outside" that time? If so, in the eyes of a second hand buyer, that would carry a little more value than, say, a 10 year old unit.
Whilst I know many will say Festool has a good resale value (and I believe it does, and should), I still see many muppets on various second hand sites grossly overvaluing their kit.
66% to 75% of new price would be the maximum I would be asking for myself, and in the higher region of that range, the unit should present as "near new". Something that's been kicked around and looks sub-par would attract a lesser price, potentially lower than this range.
OK, you can all throw the rotten tomatoes now

Recently I saw one languish on Facebook marketplace for $750. It looked good, and took over a week to sell. Meanwhile on ebay they fetch well north of $1000.
Its a good machine as you know and having furniture scale mortise and tenon capability for the money seems cheap.
I personally expect to pay 65% of new if under say 4 years old, like new. A bit older, I step down to 50%*
*3/4 of my Festools were bought used and I have only ever replaced brushes on my 18 yr old Rotex about ten years after I bought it. They really are worth the high price new or used. It's all part of the service here at The House of Pain™

Festool has sent me a txt saying the tool is fixed and being sent back to me. Should have it mid next week.
I appreciate the comments about price-setting for a second-hand unit. I'll take some photos and put an advert up on the forum. I'm keen for it to go to another woodworker that will get some use out of it. I've got several Festool tools and enjoy using them. As a weekend woodie, it can be hard to justify the price of new Festool kit. Second hand units are possibly a good way to go for some people.
cheers,
ajw
