Default Help needed for a novice please!!

    Hi

I am currently preparing a jarrah burl slab that I intend to make into a bar table. I am going well with the top and bottom but not sure how to improve the look of the egdes.

It has the natural uneven edge (which I like and want to preserve) but they are also a dirty brown colour. Is there anything I can do to reveal the more attractive colour to the wood? Sanding is not an option as the surface is so uneven - I was wondering if there is some kind of liquid preparation that might be able to clean it up?

Soryy for my ignornace - any helpwould be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

    Amanda

I saw someone use a rotary wire brush on a drill to do this once. Not a massive change in colour but it certainly helped. From memory it was a brush made with thin brass wire.

    Welcome to the forums!

I've used a wire brush before with great effect. It helps get rid of any bark left over and brushes/scratches out the black residue often left as well. You can then use a sander (electric or by hand) if you want to smooth it any further.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Hi Amanda and welcome to the forum!
I have done a couple of these natural edged slabs and I found a wire brush fitted to my cordless drill a very good way to clean the edges.
The wire will remove any dirt and rubbish and provide a natural looking surface.
I had to cut a piece off and by using the wire brush I was able to get it looking like the rest of the edges.
    Cheers,
    Steck

    Amanda,
Sorry the response is a bit late but I have seen sand blasting used to great affect on Jarrah. You can easily control the amount of material you take off.
