Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way Carl, did not think that my comment:
IMHO "a pallet" denies the spirit of these challenges, which are based on the concept of making the most of something specific and the same for everybody. This is not to say that it would not be worthwhile and fun, only that it is not another step on the road we have taken so far
would be taken as "not liking the idea" and elicit controversy. I am only saying that the logic consequence of going down this way is that any future challenge can be either
A) the way it has been for the first 3 (which does not necessarily imply posting the predetermined material) or
B) a pallet (crate etc).
Both have their pros and cons but are not the same. No harm done in trying both.
If even this simple explanation is seen as controversial, I will refrain from contributing to further "pointless crap".

It's just a small matter of time for me, I like the concept enough to be really tempted but need a few things cleared up so I know where this is going, especially how much time we've got to work in and:
"anything else you want to add is fine"
Against:
"NO additions to the pallet other than adhesive and surface finish"
"stuff involved using every bit of the pallet. Do we want to do that?"
Needs to be resolved. I prefer the later as it's more challenging.
There is also the question of advantage as to the quality of thy pallet:
"The operative word in my sentence wasn't "small', it was (nice v crap) "timber""
"a the timber in a chep pallet be it ironbark, spoty gum or any other hard wood is mutch nicer that a lump of common camphor"
"it's a crap pine one"
"I could but for this comp I would rat out a better one that I could get more timber from"
Being a scrounger from way back, I would enjoy the pallet hunt. I'd feel better working with a broken down, rusty nailed, splint, stained, old hardwood one to a brand spanking newy, I'd feel I was freeing the poor bit of wood of it's life of slavery and giving it a new and better life.
I'm all for this spirit:
"this mundane object into a thing of beauty"
"I'd be interested in this competition - my skills are limited, but hey it would be fun to be involved"
"Let's not be so competitive and just enjoy seeing what some of our creative and skillful fellow woodworkers can do with a few pieces of rubbish timber."
Now we're cookin!!

I'm with Springwater, I would prefer to recycle a pallet rather than use a new one. Hell half the funs in the hunt and the chase. I know there's a sweet old pallet out there with my name on it (well prob someone elses name on it at the moment) All we need are our rules , a pallet and your imagination.

Nailed it Weisy,
it's not about pretty timber, (we can start another thread, "photo of the prettiest wood")
it's about design, innovation, aesthetics, material constraints, problem solving, stepping a little sideways out of your comfort zone, and just plain clevernessness,
it's about impressing the pants off your non woodworking friends (who recognise a pallet as a piece disposable crap)
participants in this challenge will win new friends, will be invited to better parties (with imported beers and wine in bottles) , they will be guaranteed a rise in social standing,
and generally be considered superior in all ways
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?
