    Question Spindle Size (HP) adequacy

    Hi All,

I'm looking into buying an air cooled spindle for the CNC I'm building and was hoping for some advice. Currently I'm leaning towards a Tekno 1 HP (24000rpm) due to a number of reasons but also the physical size of the unit.

It will mainly be used for cutting timber (mahogany, QLD maple, rock maple etc) but I would also like to occasionally make custom tools and jigs from aluminium.

Would 1hp be ok for ally? (i guess depth of cut, speed and feed etc would also come into play)

    thanks
    Glenn

    Hi Glenn,
I have a cheap Chinese 800 watt spindle on my machine which is two years old now. It cuts ally with a 5mm carbide mill cutter at 0.75mm DOC at 1500mm/min without pushing it hard. I have cut 20mm plate and regularly do 10, 12 and 16mm plate.

Abviously 1.5kw would be better but it still doesn't hold a 1/2 bit and weighs a lot more than the 800 watt so take your choice.

If the machine will take it I would go the 1.5kw as there is very little difference in price in the Chinese cost of the spindle - Tekno might be different.

Do you have a link to the Tekno?
    Cheers,
    Rod

    Thanks Rod

I was looking at the spindles via this chap:DamenCNC - TeknoMotor He has been very helpful and only to happy to answer my multiple emails.

Specifically I was looking at the C31/40-C-DBS-P-ER20-0.7KW-24000RPM

I guess one of the main reasons which may be a silly one was the physical size of the spindle, it has the ER20 and it measures around 63 x 83 x 240, weighing 4kg

the next model up is the C41/47-B-DB-P-ER25-HY-1.6KW-24000RPM which goes to the ER25 and measures 93 x 83 x 310, weighing 8 kg (i don't think my gantry would have an issue though??). The price is almost double too. But i think this may really be the better option in the long run

From what I have read these units seem pretty good and well worth the money, but i do also need to have a good look into the air cooled Chinese spindles, i did have a 2.2kw water cooled unit previously and it served well,it was just the water set up was a bit of a pain (my fault not theirs!)

    Cheers
    Glenn

I haven't seen that seller, his price actually seems pretty good to.

I was looking at one similiar through Lovehappyshopping where i bought my watercooled unit, NEW AIR-COOLE MOTOR SPINDLE 3KW AND MATCHING INVERTER (eBay item 390260695202 end time 09-Mar-11 14:53:25 AEDST) : Business, Office Industrial

will definitely have to do some more research on these units.

    thanks
    Glenn

    Hi Glenn,
I wasn't recommending that seller or the unit. Just showing that you can get the square body as a lot think only the cylindrical units come out of China.
Be good to see what you decide on.
    Cheers,
    Rod
