John
have a look at my earlier article on the huanyung VFD's.
The most important point is that you need to set the Minimum frequency to ay least 100hz, or you will burn out your spindle as the cooling fan does not come on until the spindle reaches 100hz.
if you have any other problems with your unti, give me a PM.
Cheers
Noel

Frank,
I can't see it on there.
I have to go to the one in melbourne tomorrow to buy some terroidal maggnets and a HF suppressor for my VFD, so i'll get the cat number for you.

The cable I bought from Jaycar was ... 4 Core Screened Professional Microphone Cable STOCK-CODE:WB1540, but the wire is very fine ... 26/0.10 x 4 ... 22 AWG all very flexible and nicely braided screening with 16 x 9/0.10.
From the AWG tables 22 AWG = 0.64516mm dia and the tables say 7amps for chassis wiring or 0.92 amps for power transmission [whatever that means!!]
I would have thought we would need at least 18AWG = 1.02362mm dia and 16 amps chassis or 2.3 amps power transmission.
The AWG tables I referenced were found at ... http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm
I am really out of my depth here!! I know what happens when you connect 2 wires together and you make a circuit and I can put switches in etc, but I just had a gut feel that the wire I bought was too fine and was looking to replace it with wire of a 'suitable size' whatever that is! I bought some other stuff from my local supplier, but found it had 'foil' screening (not braiding), and I did not think that would work with the flexing in the cable chain.
Cheers,

Hi Allan,
I think the microphone cable would be a little light for a spindle.Cheers,

Hi Guys
My concern with using the Jaycar cable is the voltage rating of the cable ...I would gues microphone cable wouldnt be rated for 240v...??

Hi Gents,
Been thinking about it, use power cable. You'll have to deal with the EMF.

We looked through the Jaycar catalog but i didn't see any.
I just read an article which stated that grounding the unit might not be the way to go as it is a HF type. Grounding units that produce LF resonance work well with shielding, but the HF just uses the ground to propagate the HF back.
This leads me to question then, why did the manufacturer no ground the spindle. Is it with this knowledge that it might cause issues? probably not, i suspect they may be saving money (chinese)
John,
Back to your question, I suspect the cabling used for speakers would allow the currents and voltages we want and they may have a cable with a shield. I would have to look more into this.
In the interim, i am going to go with the mods I proposed and see how they pan out. If anything it is expected to improve the situation.

teroidal magnet and HF suppressor - reduce HF induced noise.
Use one on the 240V input, the other on the line to the motor.

Hi Mike
Let me tell you my experience with the smoothstepper and EMI. I was ready to throw the smoothstepper over the back fence when Greg suggested that I ground the computer case to the machine. I did that and all my problems were solved immediately. Initially I just used a jumper with aligator clips each end so quite a simple thing to test.
Now I can turn off the driver board and turn it back on and Windows recovers the link and the smoothstepper doesn't even complain. Before this it was a lot of fiddling pulling USB cable, switching off driver board and a series of profanities before it would connect again.Cheers,
Rod
