Wish list:
Thread dial is missing, fixed and travelling steadies, faceplate, these would all be nice one day when the budget allows.

New ( to me ) Hercus
Yesterday, I crashed my credit card.
ATM 260 serial number 17916 is mine.
Ex TAFE Tasmania, it' an 82 model. The numbers match at the name plate, tail stock and the bed.
Hasn't been cleaned properly in who knows how long. A few bits missing, like lathe dogs, no centres or drill chuck, reversing or external jaws for the 5" PB 3 jaw. The tailstock MT2 taper is manky, to put it kindly.
Otherwise it looks good and currently is 3 sphase, which will go to single phase, given the extra expense of a VSD. Evidently I can do something with capacitors to make the coolant pump operate. Buy another switch for the forward/reverse.
Fortunately, I did receive a milling attachment " bizzo ". Apologies from me, I am a learner. Anyone care to let me know what is missing ?
If anyone can advise me what to look for with the external or reverse chuck jaws I'd be grateful. The ones I have now are matched in numbers plus the letter E on part of the body.
Will be looking for a spare parts manual and a 260 specific operators/owners manual. Can't say I'm overly thrilled with the propspect of paying $10, plus $7 postage for a 24 page spare parts manual always advertised on eBay. $7 postage is a stab.
Anyway, well pleased to be here and finally own the bench lathe that been lacking in the tool arsenal. I've noticed someone else here calls themselves a tool whore, well, I'm a tool perve. Looking forward to being able to participate and get the lathe up and running in the next month.
Will be looking for advice on tooling tips and suchlike, this is all a learning curve for me.
cheers
Richard

What a ripper
Hi Richard, congratulations on finding what your pictures show of a nice 260 lathe I assume you had it all cleaned before you took the pics as it looks brilliant
So welcome and you are number 81 on the register
Also are there many places in Tassie that sell Lathes and Mills ???
all the best Derek bitza500

Thanks Derek, The pics were taken as soon as it hit the floor at home.
Cameras are wonderful tools - the 260 couldn't be dirtier.
I spent some time last night with the 3 jaw chuck; now it turns with one finger, as I expect it should.
I am a complete novice at machining, have now realised the dial is missing from the thread chaser as well as the other " bits are missing " mentions from my initial post.
The more I work at cleaning it up the more I will find.
You can be certain I will update the pics as things get cleaner.
cheers
Richard

260 bits
HiRichard, try Bruce Wallis his number is 0357257280 he lives in Wangaratta and works from home selling machinery and had all sorts of hercus parts
Very nice guy but his storage is a bit chaotic so it may take him a while to find anything you may need
the other is Mick Moyles in Sydney am not sure what he has as I have been to Bruce's and saw quite a bit of Hercus parts plus he has boxes of parts he cannot remember
If you have no luck I can ask one of the other hercus Owners who lives in Wang to go and have a look
What part of Tasmania do you live in as I may be making the move before the the year is out parts and machines as well
all the best Derek

Thanks Derek, the information is greatly appreciated. I'll give both contacts a try nd let you know how I get on. There are always lurkers, who are interested, which may in turn spark more interest for the machines.
I live outside of Hobart, moved here 21 years ago. A pleasant place is Tassie. As far as machine shops go, well...
the internet is as good a place as any to shop, in most cases it is cheaper for the same items.
Have performed a little more cleaning and oiling this morning, will post another pic or two soon. Despite a thorough clean out and lube, the four jaw chuck is a tad stiff.

Has there been a list made of the names who own the initials marked on the rear of the bed at the front. Mine is marked BS; surely it couldn't be ?
cheers

Hi Richard,
Nice unit! Bet it doesn't stay that clean long..
I see Bruce a bit so if you know what you need I can check with him.
I know he does have a 260 on the floor and he does have as new thread chasers to suit it
Cheers

Thanks Ian,
I appreciate your offer, will see how I go contacting him on Monday.
It will stay clean at least for al ittle while, I've shot my wad on buying the lathe, the tooling which I don't have, costs.
Fortunately, I have a friend who lets me play as I go.
cheers

I have an old model Hercus A4929 and I'm looking for T slotted cross slide. Casting or slide from another make that needs small mods will do. Help please

G'day Richard,
I agree with all the other posts, that's a damn nice looking unit you have scored yourself, congratulations. I just bought a 260 a couple of weeks ago, (see back a few posts on this thread) and hopefully after a bit of work I can get her looking that nice.
I have been wondering what change gears came with the 260 as standard and was hoping you might be able to let me know what ones came with yours?
Cheers,
Greg.

G'day Greg,
pipeclay has provided you with what was originally fitted to ATMs.
There are a large number of gears on eBay, being sold by...
Respectfully, I suggest the price is reasonable compared to genuine.
With my lathe I received the following extra gears
18, 25, 33, 39, 42, 48, 50, plus a 63 and 64 which are joined together with a bushing and key.
Can anyone shed some light for me on the joined 63and 64 tooth set ?
cheers

The gears you have enable you to cut the full range of Imperial threads, the 64/63 compound is required for them as well.
