Advice needed - Rosette
Good morning everyone.
Im planning a Cittern, somewhat like this one http://www.usd.edu/smm/PluckedString...tern13500.html Now most of the lutherie is OK but the rosette.... I got some balsa on the weekend to try it out on, I used a sharp knife which cut OK but Balsa splits. there is a strong grain. I stuck on some vellum which helped but the balsa still cracked at the back.
Now Im thinking about another timber, recommendations please. Close graines but easy to cut. I have a saw for pearl inlay cutting, I expect this will help but are there other clues to stop this %*$(*&^ cracking.
Thx in advance

Why don't you get some advice from Trend Timber at Windsor as well as being able to buy from them.

I'm sure I read somewhere the original rosettes were cut parchment
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Rosettes
Try painting the back of the Balsa with CA and then cutting. Might work.

I've never cut anything that fine, but if I had to claret ash or mayb lebanese cedar comes to mind.. had good luck with either, but then... I never cut anything that thin.

Balsa seems too soft for carving, I'd think about using:
Jelutong
Western Red Cedar
Pawlonia
Blackwood

Sebastian I would place the balsa or a veneer between to pieces of card and cut it that way. I have cut .6-1mm veneer this way no problem just put pattern on the upper panel of cardboard.

Thanks for the responses everyone,
I tried a layer of Epoxy on the balsa, still cracked... so I took it up with an ex pattern maker who suggested Jelutong. So Im gonna get me some of that.
Bob, I got some WRC but the soundboard is WRC and Id like more contrast in colour. Still WRC seems easy enough to work,"We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer
