I think that there is a public holiday to celebrate the NRL grand final today.

For anyone interested McJings have started a machine tool section. Metal lathes, woodlathes, planers, sanders etc.
Not fully populated yet, but some interesting stuff.Bodgy

Oh...
(No, not a mention of anything untoward. I am happy to know that the 5/16" solid tungsten endmill ($10 worth) I have been using today is quite alright.
Even nicer when it slips into the 8mm collet in the Makita perfectly. )

Harry,
The bits I got from McJings today after ordering those numbers did have 1/2" shanks but their cutting lengths were only 51 mm and 25 mm respectively, which is less than what they claim (2 1/2" and 1 1/4") on their website. But I won't complain, since those cutting lengths are enough for me.

Rocker,
I was after a 5/16 bit today. Rang McJing, they said they had 5/16 bit but 1/2" shank. No 5/16 shank? Hold on ... yep here's a couple. You want hardened steel or solid carbide?
Pays to ring 'em up.

I realise this is an old thread but I just made a mortising jig and need an upcut spiral bit. I will lose 16mm in depth due to the base of the jig, and I'm trying to get 30mm minimum depth for my mortises.
The options are from McJings:
long series end mill-1144-8L 8x35x82 8mm shank (I'm supposing this gives a 35mm cutting length with 8mm cutting diam)
upcut spiral - 7466 - 5/16" diam 1 1/4" cutting length 1/2" shank (Rocker said it only has 1" cutting length)
I would rather the end mill as it has a longer cutting length, but will it be OK in a single speed Makita router? and can I get a collet for 8mm to 1/2"?
If I go with the 1144-10L end mill (10mm cutting diameter) which gives me longer cutting length I will only have 5mm walls for my mortises in 20mm thick hardwood. would that be enough?

Hi Gary...
I use a 10mm endmill in 20 mm timber frequently. Since there's not any real stress in the sidewalls during machining it is ok. The endmill you want (without looking at the items you mentioned) is a two flute* centre cutting endmill (some are ground so that they cannot be plunged because of the geometry where the lips of the flutes meet)
I have used mine in a single speed router, same as a dedicated spiral upcut bit. Cheaper tooling may have some runout, which can cause problems.
*two flute because the 3 and 4 flute tools cannot clear the chips fast enough, and can overheat and fail.
Cheers
Greg

Plunger,
I got a 3/8" diameter solid carbide spiral upcut with a 2" cutting length from McJing's; it has a 1/2" shank. A 3/8" mortice in 3/4" thick wood is a bit big; but but it would be fine in 1" stock. It is a pity that you used 16 mm thick material for the platform of your jig; 12 mm would have given you an extra 4 mm cutting depth. Lee Valley sell 1/2"-5/16" (8 mm) bushing adapters; I am not sure if there is a local supplier for them.

There is at least one local supplier. You guessed it McJing.
