    Default Bandsaw base - DIY?

    Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Band saw - In "excellent" condition - Excuse the sarcasm here....

Being an ebay item there is not much really I can do about the condition. Was advertised as excellent condition hardly used. Damn I couldnt even use it as it was, it was rattling across the floor! Turns out the pulley on the motor was about 45mm off center from the pulley on the bottom wheel causing all kinds of hell vibrations. The saw was a classic case of good from far but far from good. Picking the item up at night time meant spotting the flaws wasnt really easy. Perhaps a good move by the seller.

Ive tried to adjust it out but cannot get enough travel on the motor shaft and motor mount to line them up. Coupled with that is that the base has been knocked around and is all bent, could be a reason why nothing lines up.

I have though about possibly making a new base for it out of timber and moving the motor to behind the bandsaw. My thoughts are to make a large laminated beam to mount the cast iron band saw and motor to. Which will be bolted to a timber fully enclosed base of similar proportions to a standard base. Hopefully the large beam will be more solid then the stock motor mount which causes most 14" saws to vibrate and shake a bit.

Has anyone done this or seen something like this done? The saw is a "Baker Machinery" 14" saw made in the early 90's so should be quite good with a bit of a tuneup. It has a 1hp Motor on it.

    Cheers,
    John

I guess it can be done. It is a wooden box when all is said and done. As long as the motor mount can move enough to tension the belt. The other way is with the motor on a fixed mount and a tension pulley. There have been some home made bandsaws posted on here so search for them for some ideas.

Sounds good. There is nothing wrong with using wood to replace steel, you just need lots of it
