Mahogany valet stand
My Christmas break project. Our new place doesn't have quite enough space for all my fashion accessories, so turned a slab of mahogany into this.
Traditionally these things have a hanger attached to the back, but I didn't want one so left it off. Still need to put some hooks or something on it to keep my ties (all three of them).
Joints are almost all domino. Finish is 3 coats of maloof mix then three coats of UBeaut traditional wax. The most fun was the cock beading, which took a few goes to get right.
Not sure I'm happy with the exposed end grain on the front, though.

All looks good to me.

It has an arts and craft look to it. Very smart.
The end grain fits with the legs so I think it looks fine.
Do you have a close up of the cock beading?
and how did you go about getting the drawer front to fit the opening?
What about a short rail on each side for all your ties?
A thin wooden rail in wooden ends could fit the design.
Put a hanger on the back -- you could always hang a blue singlet on it!
I had a couple of goes at shaping a hanger but they didn't look very good so I didn't make the valet?Scally

Here you go. It's kind of embarrassing to get close ups of my mitered corners
The drawer was made normally, then the bead was done on a router and table saw, then a rebate was routed into the drawer face to accept the bead, and etc.
There's a couple of good articles in FWW 123 and 183 (subscription required) which cover it in great detail.
I stuffed this one up, made the rebates the same size all around and ended up covering up the dovetails . I have done other drawers properly, but not this one.
I like your idea for the side rails. I only have three ties, so they should hold them all.

Very nice piece Tex, looks great, nothing wrong with a little end grain.

The mitres look fine in those pics.
It makes sense, the way you did the cockbeading.
It would be a shame to cover the dovetails.
So how do you do it 'the right way?
Make the strips narrower?Scally

Only the side strips.
The "right" way is the top and bottom bead are the depth of the drawer face, ie all the way from back of the face to standing proud in front. The side pieces are cut only to the depth of the half blind dovetails - just kissing the tops of the tails. This means the side beads are mitered for their full depth, but the top and bottom beads are mitered to the depth of the side beads only, and extend to the edge of the drawer face below that.
The articles make it clearer.
DIY DAN, good to hear from you. Come to the Sydney forum GTG, would be good to chat.
