    Default Shop-made humidity gauge

    Evening,
Here's something simple I knocked together recently for the workshop out of scraps. I copied the idea from a mate of mine, a pro cabinet maker, so I can't take credit for it!
Basically its a stick of glued together crossgrain offcuts (or the waste from docking a glued-up panel) using a timber suseptible to movement. I used Hoop pine, and it moves dramatically. The RH end is fixed to the wall, and the length is supported loosely in a cradle, halfway along. This allows all movement to extend leftwards, where it pushes against a lever, connected in turn to the needle. The two levers exaggerate the movement of the pine stick, so the swing at the top is really visible. This one has moved a good 300mm between dry times about 2 months ago, even further right than this photo, and the marks I made during a week of rain.
Maybe not overly useful, but entertaining, and really does give some insight into timber movement with humidity changes.

    Hope you enjoy!
    Andy Mac

I've heard of the idea before, but this is the first working version I've seen.

Nice to know some people put theory into practice...

I like the idea of a guage, both this one and the other posted one. I have a commercial one on the rack where the wood rests. But, my best and more accurate one is my collar, when it is humid I sweat and stink like an old kitchen spounge and when it is dry I get as thirsty as Freddy Freeloader. Then it is time for turning off the equipment and savoring a tumbler of my favorite Bourbon or an occasional glass of Harry's #7.

Good one Hickory - probably the most accurate instrument & best remedy around.

At Sturt SfW they have about 2m of cross grained timber mounted. Extremes of humidity are marked. During the year I was there we had the driest year ever - which was ended by overnight rain 2 nights before our graduation exhibition.

One or two people spent an all-nighter trimming drawer fronts.
